If one were truly concerned to the point of worrying about their pulmonary/cardiovascular health and the effects of smoking tobacco, I doubt they’d be seeking out and enjoying forums such as this, they’d probably not be building campfires of tobacco, the exhaust of which is directly connected in any way shape or form to their air intake apparatus in the first place.

I’m a 9mm guy. I got tongue bite so bad at the beginning and someone suggested that charcoal filters help. Tried them and found that they did help quite a bit. Haven’t stopped using them.

I have a box of filters. Have a couple of pipes which accept filters. Can't remember the last time I've used either.

But seriously, I've never used one, and would rather smoke less frequently with unrestricted draw and untampered with flavor, than more frequently with those things. (As I think everyone should ;-) )

Sure, if the pipe calls for them. They don’t bother me and I prefer not to have tar in my mouth. That said, I have no issues whatsoever not using them.

Note: I commissioned my LVC Meerschaum with a 9mm filter fitting because I prefer the way the stem connects to the stummel.

Pretty much the only time I use filters is when a new pipe comes with them. The filter is welcome to absorb the yucky flavors of singeing stain or glue from the first couple of bowls. Then it's outta there.

I'm happy for anyone whose smoking experience is improved by filters, but I value being able to use a pipe cleaner mid-smoke higher.

I never need to use a pipe cleaner mid smoke because the stem stays clean and dry. Post smoke it barely darkens a white pipe cleaner. I can use a pipe cleaner a dozen smokes if I use a different one for the stumel.

But I do have some pipes I love that dont take a filter.

First off, they aren’t filters, per se, because smoke passes over them, not through them. At least with the balsa wood ones.

I have a few pipes that take them, and they work well to reduce moisture. They help give a better smoke, no matter what tobacco I smoke. There are several older threads on the same subject here, I’ll try to find the one that went in-depth about filter vs absorbent.

I have tried charcoal filters, balsa and those that come in corn cobs and I felt they restricted the draw too much for me and muted the flavors but if anyone likes them then go for it. Just not for me.
