People who start a sentence with "So" as in "So I went into town today..." really get my goat plus those who keep saying "like" as in "...when I saw him he was like really tall, but I had heard he was like really short".
Sad that these Americanisms have made it across the pond and we have to put up with them on a daily basis.
It's nothing short of linguistic lazyness in my view and should be scorned at by every opportunity.
Just my tuppenceworth folks :puffy:
Regards,
Jay.

"When it's all said and done." "At the end of the day." "First and foremost I want to thank god."

"Smoked down to a fine white ash."
Those folks who detest that statement presumably think it never happens. Might I suggest they try a Falcon pipe? I have smoked several Falcons (and variants thereof) and have indeed smoked my tobacco down to a fine white ash. Not every time but enough times for me to take note of it.
Just because it never happens to you doesn't mean it never happens!
Regards,
Jay.

The other day I saw a guy on TV who said the following (exact quote):
"At the end of the day, it is what is. And it's all good."

"Drill down" to mean do further research or look more deeply into something. Like many expressions, for two months, this was a good one. Now it is monotonous and a bromide. Or perhaps I should drill down on that one. I wonder if this came from oil exploration or geology.

newbroom, yes, those lists of horrible side effects from pharmaceuticals advertised on TV. They always list these while showing happy people in ideal settings. And frequently, the end of the list is death. Well, that would "cure" whatever illness is being discussed. How many people exposed to a toxic environment will die? Sooner or later, every last one.

For clarity, there is nothing wrong with starting a sentence with "so". Starting a sentence with a co-ordinating conjunction is accepted in all modern grammar books and in all authoritative writing style manuals.
Just saying.

So far, this thread shows signs of ennui, schadenfreude, and je ne sais qui.... Some folks detest using foreign words in any context. Not me.

'S'up?? Yo, dog!
As Edwin Newman and others have said, "Never use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice."

Sorry, but I still hate that phrase and it carries no significance. By the way, just what does fine white ash taste like anyway?

So, like my daughter and granddaughter might possibly make it over there come next spring and, well like ya know, I hope we don't upset everyone there because, like ya know, we don't want to get kicked off your little island.
