Virginia from 2003, Virginia Tips with higher sugar than usual, Perique grown in St. James Parish from one farm. The Perique is planted, harvested, and processed by one family farm. Who else is doing that? I think there’s a couple other kinds of Virginia in there. All priced reasonably.

Watch or read the transcribed version of Tasting Notes at smoking pipes.com. If you think this is a gimmick you might have bumped your head getting out of bed.

I’m still new at this game and i just opened a tin on receipt and loaded a bowl. No dry time. I used a stanwell with 9mm filter (i am sensitive to bite). It lit well and i was in a hurry and pushed it a bit. Jiminks captures it well esp the tangy aspects and although I am new it seemed light on the perique. I liked it and i will try again when i have more time. I pushed it and i think it would bite me without filter as i sensed more tingle than i like but that’s entirely my fault. To me it’s a keeper and im really interested to see how it ages.

Well, I’d think that because SP.com is a for-profit business. And marketing and hyping a product is a legitimate thing that many businesses do to drive sales. This does not mean Anthology is a bad tobacco. I myself, got two tins just in case. :P
it seems like it's precisely what they say it is. A blend of tobacco that isn't the same things they already have for sale.

I generally like to smoke a few ounces of a tobacco in a few different pipes before I feel like I can truly give an accurate, though subjective, opinion. Also, keep in mind that a lot of my pipes have been previously ghosted with CRFw/P so I have taken that into account.

For me, this tobacco shares a lot of similarities with CRFw/P, as it should. There both VaPers, from the same manufacturer sharing some of the same constituent tobaccos. Anthology is a little bit lighter, a little smoother with a few less rough edges. Perhaps a little more restraint with the Perique but I still get it. The Perique in this blend has more of the fig, raisins, dry red wine aspect and a bit less of the pepper, though the pepper is still noticeable on the retrohale. The Virginias are a little smoother, creamier with a bit less of the earthy, mineral aspects than what you get the CRFw/P. I do get a little more sweetness and tanginess from this blend. For me at least, the strength is about medium. After a bowl, my nicotine needs are satisfied. All in all, I'm quite enjoying this tobacco and am having a grand time burning through my first tin. These are my initial thoughts. As usual, YMMV.

I tried it today and I wasn't impressed. I'll let my two tins age a while and come back at a later date. The components sounded good and I missed out on CRF so I gave it a shot. Oh well!
So I've come back and tried this a second go round fresh out of the tin with no dry time and in a different pipe and I must say it is a totally different experience. Much sweeter and less spicy this time. I'm diggin it!

Just cracked open the tin and am smoking a first bowl out of a meer. For me, it was a bit wet out of the tin--I let it rest for about 15 minutes as it was moist and cool to the touch after I rubbed out a flake. Even with that, I had a number of relights. I really am enjoying the sweetness of the Virginias, but there's definitely a bit of the darker stone fruit that's keeping me interested throughout the bowl.

I'm looking forward to smoking the open tin throughout the week to get a better sense of the blend.

Ask them about the time they renamed Oriental Silk for a special edition pipe show tobacco.
I thought about responding to his post in addition to a couple others but thought better of it. That level of logic is not worth responding to. The best one was something to the effect, “one of the guys on smokingpipes YouTube video said it was amazing”.

I've smoked a number of bowls of Anthology and have enjoyed them all. I liked all the CRF and CRF w/perique batches I've bought and enjoy Bijou as well. This blend is different from all of those, very balanced with the perique and more fig and wine notes instead of pepper as others have mentioned. No harshness or young rough edges to the VA tobacco at all. Overall a very good blend in my opinion, glad I picked up a few tins.

How long ago was that, Embers? Was it a good seller, did it get rave reviews? Perhaps they thought it was good enough for a special pipe show tobacco and I'm guessing with new art work, etc.
Be interesting to know if Jez the Blend was involved at that time.
I don't know, I haven't smoked either Oriental Silk of this new one (yet). Just throwing it out there.

Could be blenders just want to mess around and come up with something fun and different and they don’t have the quantities to make huge runs. It’s not like Habanos that decides to throw an extra band on a current production cigar, toss it in a bling box and charge 3x the price for it or find a bunch of old tobacco in a warehouse and create an entire like of the Anejos line and talk about how it’s aged tobacco and again charge more. I’d trust the pipe world more than the socialist that run Habanos any day.

I didn't buy Anthology, so what I'm about to write has nothing to do with it. The pipe world is no different from the cigar world in labeling the same product with multiple different labels. 1Q might be the champion for that. Or they take the same base and alter the topping on it and declare it a new blend.

Why? It works to wring more profit from a blend with minimal effort. People will have several different labels of the same blend and will swear they're all different. This is certainly true of pipe smokers. And we're now seeing that manufacturers are switching out contents and keeping the label the same because it's got a following and it's easier to do that.

Deceptive practices are a long tradition and widespread throughout a number of markets. That's why some small number of laws were enacted to attempt to curb at least some of this activity. When was the last time you saw an ad featuring a doctor recommending which brand of cigarettes is best for you like Sweet Caparol Cigarettes, once upon a time a huge name, used to do?

I worked on enough commercials early in my career, literally hundreds of them, to get quite an earful about how marketing works to subliminally manipulate John Q Public. You're relied upon to kid yourselves.

Exactly that Sable ? . I bought anthology because I like va/per blends not because somebody else said it was good. I explained in my other post on this thread. I don't care what anybody says, we earn our money ourselves, well most of us anyway. So I'm gonna buy what I want not what others don't. And vice-versa. Which shouldn't mean someone who dislikes certain brands or people to put down in anyway something that makes someone out there happy weather it be tobacco or anything else.

'kin A bud.

As an after-thought. I got to thinking that maybe C&D might have been asked to produce/supply a tobacco for a pipe show at short (ish) notice. Not having the time to blend something new, they thought of using the Oriental Silk, Embers had mentioned, and what I had mentioned in my earlier post, fancy-up the packaging, etc.. Who knows?
Of course, I'm only speculating here.
I still stand by what I said in one of my earlier posts, and I don't have any sides here, that I seriously doubt C&D are going to (purposely) BS thier customers.
