I don't really chase tobacco, living across the pond means alot of tobacco talked about on the form is difficult or even impossible to obtain so never knowing is something I've got used to. Having said that as a kiddywink I had a set of dominoes that lived in an old tobacco tin, it was a tin of tam o shanter pipe tobacco. I'd love a tin or even a couple of bowls but it's long been discontinued.s-l400.jpgs-l400.jpg

If you can spare the extra coin, Pipestud often has tins of MacBaren's HH Syrian, which is an excellent Syrian Latakia blend.

As for me, my experiences with previous white whales have taught me not to get too excited for any tobacco, as frankly, they're all just tobacco. Some of them are wonderful, but they can never transcend that basic fact for me. With that out of the way, I'd love to get a chance to try some McC Dark Star, Esoterica Tilbury, some of the old heyday Sobranies (759, Virginia No. 10). I know the Tillbury will come around, but some of the others are gone forever.
I agree with you on the idea that it's all just tobacco and as good as it may be, it'll never be more than that. I'm a brewer and I have tasted many "white whale" beers and at the end of the day, never have I tasted anything that made me forget my woes(at least not with one sip ?).

As far as tobacco goes, so far, you're the only person in this thread I can help out. I've PMed you about some Tilbury.

I'd have to say my White Whale tin would just be a simple tin of Frog Morton that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'd also like to try any of the Esoterica blends that aren't available in tins, as well as Penzance and Stonehaven. and I've heard great things about Germains plum cake. Other than that, I'm still new enough that I don't know enough to have an informed decision about what a proper white whale should be.

There's a whole pod of white whales floating around in Europe that I would like - Kohlhase & Kopp seasonal blends. I really enjoyed the Winter Blends up until the FDA mucked things up and Kohlhase & Kopp stopped shipping the new blends over here.

On another note, a very unique tobacco connected whale I'd like to get my hands on is the Perique liqueur they distill in France named "Perique." I enjoyed a couple of glasses of it with Mark Ryan at the L.A. Poche facility in St. James Parish a couple of years ago.

I see HH Vintage Syrian pop up from time to time for steep prices, but I actually saw multiple 100g tins at a pipe shop about an hour north of me. If you call them, they will ship to you. Let me know if you want the contact info.

I've been fortunate enough to try many old McClellands which I love. My favorite though is a home blend made by a forum member and very generous friend, a blend of 20 year old McC #22, 5100, & Percy Martin Perique. It's is as good as it gets for my taste buds, plenty of tangy goodness that's toned down over the years, and is consistent in taste from beginning to end.

I would love to have tried Syrian Latakia in it's heyday. I do remember going into Druecker's(sp) in Berkeley in the early 80's. Of course, I was a 'way too cool 'RYO guy back in those days. Wall to wall tins and Bulk. Oh the aroma of that shop in the heart of Berkeley! When I ponder the variety of the blends in that place in those days... I usually walked out of there with a couple of cans of Three Castles of Sabranie Ovals.

Kinda silly, but I'd really love to get to try a bowl of some /old/ Captain Black, just to see what it was like back in the day ...I love premium, top shelf tobaccos, but the Captain was the first one to reel me into the hobby :)

No white whale for me. I have way too many blends I really enjoy to expend significant energy and dollars chasing after a unicorn. I do wish they still made Klondike Gold and Rotary Navy Flake. If I see some available at a reasonable price, I buy it. But I don't chase it and I don't pay huge money for it.

Try my best not to be a Captain Ahab but I've only ever had one bowl of Butera's Pelican and I remember it very fondly. From time to time when a consignment tin comes up for sale I think about coughing up the dough but honestly there are so many new blends out there to try it just seems silly.

I'am awaiting a blend you can smoke like a freight train engine without biting and still tastes amazing and also has a scent that makes people feel like throwing wads of cash your way. Sadly it seems like no one has thought this through and realized what a fortune that they could make off such a blend, until they do I wait patiently.

McClelland Blackwoods Flake, or Beacon Extra for me.

McClelland was my favorite blender when I picked up the pipe. At the start, I only ordered tobacco when I finished a tin, and so when McClelland shut down, I had no “cellar” supply. I was able to get one more tin of Blackwoods before they all sold out. I may never have the pleasure of combusting Beacon Extra again though!

Lesson learned. If you like something, get some backup tins of it!

This should be seen by the guys newer to the hobby. In this day and age where blends are dropping off the market like flies and where the FDA lurks behind every deeming date, cellar something deep if you like it!
