Unfortunately, hextor, if there is visible mold that is but a single colony. There will likely be spores throughout, with more colonies to come. If you smoke the rest, you may be smoking spores, which may or may not be bad for you. There will likely be more mold in the future, though.

And for the record, at least on my part, this conversation does not have anything to do with any company. It is a study in what one would do to combat a mold issue in any tobacco, and what options are, scientifically and from experience, available should one have an issue that can't be remedied with a return. Sorry if I've prolonged a thread of which some have wearied.

It seems pretty simple to me but I've been accused of being simple myself. The company has offerred refunds. What else could they do to make folks happy? Before this blend came out everyone was chugging right along with all the other outstanding blends out there. It's totally your choice take the money and invest in other fine blends. If you dont take the refund it's on you not the company.

Blue mold is usually what you find on leaves, but what kind is it on the processed product?

Well it took me a while to read the entire thread but I got there eventually
The way I see it is a tobacco manufacturer has inadvertently put out a substandard product, those who found fault with the product rightly complained. Then said manufacturer rightly puts up its hands and apologises, offering to exchange any and all faulty tins.
To my understanding that is it, end of story...unless I blinked and missed something :puffy:

Jay.

The quandary for me is, does one risk, or more accurately, waste time buying from any particular blending house until the problem is fixed?

For me, the answer is no.Fix the problem and then you can have my money. Replacing tainted product, while admirable, isn't a solution. My 2 cents.

Apologies guys, I was of the impression the issue was indeed fixed...so I must have blinked then

And that is where the uncertainty lies. They who must not be named claim it is. Yet blends keep popping up that have been affected.

If X = moldy baccy and Y = offer to pay for tins then X+Y= send the tins back.
Is it a hassle, yes. Was it deliberate, no.
Why is this still a thing?
It's not like the unnamed company told you to go fuck yourself and everyone is handwringing about THAT.

What tins? Is there a date range?
Carolina Red for sure. Anything else? There are a lot of theories and assumptions, but no facts about where the actual problem is.

Neil, I wasn't aware of that, I genuinely thought the problem was solved eventually.
Yes, I too would be wary of buying from my favoured blender if such issues persisted and would certainly refrain from buying from them until a full all clear was reported by the smokers perhaps more so than from the producers.

Jay.

Whipping this dead horse some more.
Said nameless company has a mission to produce the purest product with the least amount of pesky additives. They pride themselves on doing this. Every time a tin shows up moldy, like Temple Bar most recently, they make good on replacing it and state that they have solved the issue. Which holds true until the next moldy tin shows up. More than one observer has pointed out that the problems seem to center around products using red Virginia.
The problem is pride, or an excess of it. They take pride in producing the most natural unadulterated product possible. That the product repeatedly has mold issues is a lesser concern because it's natural, and that's what matters. Maybe a bit less pride, with a bit more humility, coupled with a gestalt understanding of the factors involved, would lead to a better overall result.

What's strange about all this is people keep saying it's the red VA but I have been buying a large amount of bulk tobaccos (a lot of those containing red VA) and have not once seen a problem with mold. Is there a good reason it would target just the tinned tobacco? I've not heard of a single incident of mold growing on their bulk, why is that?

Very astute observation! Maybe you should be working for the CDC.

Do you have the same blends (in bulk) as the ones in the tins showing mold growth? Produced at the same time?

Could it be that the tins are contaminated? Or other equipment in the tinning process?
You should offer up your bio sleuthing services to TUC Tobacco (The Unnamed Company).

Guys, I just opened a tin of XXX from TUC. The bar inside was covered in so much white fur I had to get my straight razor just to shave enough back to confirm that there was in fact tobacco inside. Undaunted, I took a deep whiff of the bald spot to get a sense of the tin note. Man, this thing smells amazing! There was a slight nose tingle, kinda like perique. After which I had to lie down for a little bit as I became slightly lightheaded....which is awesome. Think about it, you can just a nice buzz without even having to light this stuff up! Now, that's value. I think you guys have been looking at this the wrong way.
