I guess I must lead a really sheltered life. I have no idea what a hipster is. I'm just a broken down old guy. I don't watch TV and never listen to the radio or read the paper. I just go about my day/s weeks, months, years and enjoy life. What year is it by the way? At one point I thought our house had been broken into by a midget biker gang pillaging our pantry until my wife informed they were something called grandchildren.

And they had the unmitigated gall to gleefully chow down all of my honey graham animal crackers.

The ingraits!

Shikano,
I willingly sacrifice a bag of Goldfish Crackers as a bribe by leaving them in plain sight, and leaving the pistachios & cashews hidden until my Happy Hour.

This entire issue is, well, a non-issue.
Those who get into pipe smoking simply to be perceived a certain way by others, and not because it is something THEY like or want to do, will soon tire of it and move on to something else.
In the meantime, they financially support the PipeWorld. (Knock yourselves out, guys!)
Those who get into pipe smoking for its intrinsic satisfactions and don't give a shit what others think of them might also abandon it after a while---most will, in fact---but SOME of them will stick. Guaranteed. That is how it's always been.
In the meantime, they will also financially support the PipeWorld.
I'm afraid I don't see a problem or a downside to any of this. In fact, it's a net positive, because among the first group---people who try pipe smoking for "peer pressure" reasons (for lack of a better term)---there will be some "Wow! This IS a good thing!" cases who surprise themselves and become lifelong pipemen.

georged- I feel the same way about people who try the pipe because of Sherlock Holmes movies, or Lord of the Rings. At least they're moving some product, and who knows, some may take to it for a lifetime.

Interesting thread. I've not given thought to much of this until I started reading this one.
So, there are hipsters, hippies, but has there been no mention of simply being "hip"? "As in, yeah, man I'm hip to Balkans, man."

Hipsters. I chortle when I see some of the fashion, but it's no more outlandish than any other fad.
I drank PBR (and still do) before it was hip.

43 years on this planet, married, raising two kids, paying my bills and my mortgage, paying taxes, never been a drain on the system...
At this point, I'll do what I damned well please!

I recently had a morning conversation with a female hipster at the coffee shop. After I asked about her Yin Yang tattoo she spent the next 20 min telling me about her personal Tao & how the tattoo kept it all in harmony keeping her life organized & so much simpler, as she ate her gluten-free muffin & drank her coconut water on ice chips.

There is a tendency in human nature to conflate the aesthetic with the moral. What we dislike aesthetically, we castigate morally. We flail against the "corruption" and dissolution of our culture, and find it difficult to distinguish mores, morals, manners,, and aesthetics, because together they comprise our culture.
People define themselves aesthetically at a very young age.

I was going to respond to this thread, but it's beneath me. I'm off to hit this lame club ironically to watch the sheep who actually go because it makes them feel cool. I'm going to find my fedora and my vintage Abercrombie jeans and meet my androgynous pals for few PBR's and watch all the poser wannabes text their girlfriends on their lame iPhones. :)

Many people waste too much energy being concerned about what other people are doing.
Amen!

And apparently, too many people care about what others think of them!
Can one truly ironically enjoy something? A real question—I am sure I've done so, just can't remember the details.

Since Mr. Duchamp is my avatar I feel somewhat obligated to weigh in.

Once one adopts Nihilism as their guiding principle, there is suddenly a large void waiting to be filled, lest it swallow you up.

I find it much easier being Lutheran.

Well most of pipe smoker that started smoking because it's hype will end up with some low and mid-grade pipes that will sell as estates after the hype is gone.
