We run a feedlot operation.
This morning I ran a pen of calves through the headgate, giving them their vaccinations and a parasite treatment.
185 head in a blinding snow. I had trouble keeping my syringes from freezing.
I have another 185 head to do this afternoon and then both these pens are done for awhile.
Its still snowing and 30F, with a stiff wind....its going to be a long afternoon.
In two weeks we'll run them through again and check for pregancies, abort the ones that might be preggers...and give the whole lot of 'em a growth implant.
Two weeks after that, the two 185 head pens will be combined and moved to one of the larger pens to begin their trip to your table.
All part of the exciting, romantic world of the modern cattle business.
