It’s still hilarious. My wife likes it too and she’s from Vietnam. +5

Back in 2020 I bought the twin DVD set Flags of our Fathers & Letters from Iwo Jima.

Well I watched the first film last night and quite enjoyed it. Not your run of the mill American war film (all guns & huge explosions with no real story), this actually had an interesting tale to tell.

Some of the sound effects had me jumping out of my skin so for that I'll award it a thumping 4/5.

Regards,

Jay.

Love the later movies from Malpaso Productions, beautiful pictures.
There is something with the lighting that appeal to me.

I started to watch the second film in my twin set last night which was 'Letters From Iwo Jima'.

Nobody told me this is in Japanese with no option for an English overdub! I was well annoyed. Yes it had subtitles but I refuse to watch anything with subs as I then have 2 things to keep my eye on.

0/5 from me.

Instead I started watching the 'Over There' boxset, a brief review will follow once watched.

Regards,

Jay.

I just watched the excellent 'Child 44' film on DVD starring the great Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace and the wonderful Paddy Considine.

Based on the true story of child murderer Andrei Chikatilo in 1950's Russia, it is both excellently acted and visually absorbing.

A rock solid 5/5 from me.

This was based on the novel of the same name, no?

The point of the pair of films was to show each perspective from both sides—it seems you did yourself a disservice not watching the second film, especially as intended.

I get what you're saying but with my poor eyesight, trying to read subtitles whilst simultaneously watching the action just wasn't going to happen.

I'm sure the story could have been told just as convincingly if it was in English, even an overdub wouldn't have hurt.

I've tried subtitles in the past and it basically ruins the film for me. Two eyes and one brain and all that.

As for Child 44, not sure if there was a book (quite likely) but there was another excellent film about it called Citizen X.

Jay.

Sakra starring and directed by Donnie Yen A very good wuxia move based on Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. If you like martial arts movies with big fight scenes and excellent fight cinematography this is for you. Watch it as an action film and try to over look how poorly the story is woven together and the plot holes, does anyone really watch martial arts movies for solid plots and cohesive stories though? 4.5 Stars

I watched Martin Klunes two horse movies. It's in English but, I managed without the closed caption option Jay.:poop:

A five out of five for me. He also did a show on dogs which is also 5/5. I'm a sucker for horses and dogs. And, Klunes does a hell of a job.

Vinland Saga season 2.
I'm not finished the season but the first 3/4 is still pretty good.
Where season 1 is more about kings and armies season 2 is about personal struggle and family turmoil in 1000AD Denmark.
If you've never watched anime this is probably a good starting point.

I'll give season 1 a 5/5 and season 2 just a 4/5 for being slower paced.

Just watched Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal on YouTube. Some kind person has uploaded it so you can watch it for free. I'll leave the link below.

I won't leave a lengthy review as only one word is needed to describe this movie: masterpiece

5*/5

Although the link below says "video unavailable" if you click on the underlined "watch on YouTube" it'll take you right to it.

I've seen a couple of documentaries on Andrei Chikatilo but I hadn't heard about this movie. From what I recall Chikatilo was active during the 1980's not the 1950's and he murdered a lot of women as well as children. Maybe they've taken a few liberties with the story?

I'm a big fan of both Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy and the story interests me so I'll definitely be putting this on my watch list.

Thanks for the heads up, Jay👍

Jay, I just Googled it and Wikipedia said the movie was very loosely based on the Chikatilo case. That would explain the discrepancies.

There's a good movie based on the case that sticks much more to the facts called Citizen X. It's free on YouTube (link below) and it has a good cast including Max von Sydow, Donald Sutherland, Imelda Staunton, Joss Ackland and Stephen Rea. It was made in 1995 so it's nearly 30 years old now but it's definitely worth a watch if you're at a loose end.

Yes Chris, you're quite correct, it was indeed Andrei Chikatilo and the earlier film Citizen X was fantastic, more sinister in my mind than Child 44.

I did look for it on DVD but had no joy so will try your Youtube link tomorrow so cheers for that.

Jay.
