Love the later movies from Malpaso Productions, beautiful pictures.Back in 2020 I bought the twin DVD set Flags of our Fathers & Letters from Iwo Jima.
Well I watched the first film last night and quite enjoyed it. Not your run of the mill American war film (all guns & huge explosions with no real story), this actually had an interesting tale to tell.
Some of the sound effects had me jumping out of my skin so for that I'll award it a thumping 4/5.
Regards,
Jay.
I just watched the excellent 'Child 44' film on DVD starring the great Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace and the wonderful Paddy Considine.
Based on the true story of child murderer Andrei Chikatilo in 1950's Russia, it is both excellently acted and visually absorbing.
A rock solid 5/5 from me.

I started to watch the second film in my twin set last night which was 'Letters From Iwo Jima'.
Nobody told me this is in Japanese with no option for an English overdub! I was well annoyed. Yes it had subtitles but I refuse to watch anything with subs as I then have 2 things to keep my eye on.
0/5 from me.
Instead I started watching the 'Over There' boxset, a brief review will follow once watched.

Jay.
I get what you're saying but with my poor eyesight, trying to read subtitles whilst simultaneously watching the action just wasn't going to happen. The point of the pair of films was to show each perspective from both sides—it seems you did yourself a disservice not watching the second film, especially as intended.
Good old Fred. Dude had his own steamrollerSaw this on the telly the other night. 30 years or more since I last watched it. The late Fred Dibnah, what we call in England a ‘character’. 5/5
I've seen a couple of documentaries on Andrei Chikatilo but I hadn't heard about this movie. From what I recall Chikatilo was active during the 1980's not the 1950's and he murdered a lot of women as well as children. Maybe they've taken a few liberties with the story?I just watched the excellent 'Child 44' film on DVD starring the great Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace and the wonderful Paddy Considine.

I always watch the ashes. I get full coverage for free with my Formula One subscription so it's a win win.The Ashes, day 3.
Jay, I just Googled it and Wikipedia said the movie was very loosely based on the Chikatilo case. That would explain the discrepancies.I just watched the excellent 'Child 44' film on DVD starring the great Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace and the wonderful Paddy Considine.

Yes Chris, you're quite correct, it was indeed Andrei Chikatilo and the earlier film Citizen X was fantastic, more sinister in my mind than Child 44.Jay, I just Googled it and Wikipedia said the movie was very loosely based on the Chikatilo case. That would explain the discrepancies.
There's a good movie based on the case that sticks much more to the facts called Citizen X. It's free on YouTube (link below) and it has a good cast including Max von Sydow, Donald Sutherland, Imelda Staunton, Joss Ackland and Stephen Rea. It was made in 1995 so it's nearly 30 years old now but it's definitely worth a watch if you're at a loose end.
