Just finished the first season of Salvation on Paramount+

It's about a MIT student and a tech billionaire who discover a extinction level asteroid is going to impact Earth in about six months.

A high amount of unnecessary drama ensues, including corporate espionage, cyber terrorism, and the threat of nuclear war. There is also a less than perfect government response, including a coup to overthrow the president.

It's not great, but it's not terrible either. The female lead is nice to look at and the male lead is a pretty good actor. (He also plays a main character in Star Trek: Picard)

I understand why it only lasted two seasons. 3/5*

"Stars Jennifer Garner...I'll pass, not a fan."

Any relation to James Garner I wonder?

I took my daughter to go see The Batman after school today.

I will admit, the trailer caught my eye but I had my reservations going in. Growing up in the 80's on Adam West reruns, the Tim Burton films and some of the best Batman stories to ever grace a comic panel... I expect certain things from Batman and I didn't know if the sparkling emo vampire kid from Twilight could pull it off.

The film had a run time of nearly three hours. The focus was on a Bruce Wayne who was only two years into carrying the mantle of the Batman. A new take on the Riddler served as the antagonist. Several members of the usual rogues gallery were present. Overall, the action was good. The story was well done and the dialogue carried the film at a good pace. I was pleasantly surprised.

Robert Pattinson did an excellent job as Batman. Not my favorite portrayal, but certainly not the worst one I've seen on film. A solid 5/5* and a must see for any Batman fan.

I'm not a huge film buff but I do occasionally engage. Lately I've been clearing my hard drive on my Panasonic and recording more films without knowing anything about them....with occasionally bad results and last night's film was an absolute disaster.

Called 'Snowpiercer' it was apparently set in the future where the entire planet is frozen over.....and mankind's only survivors are aboard a train hurtling around the world  .

They have lived on this train for 17 years! (where did the fuel come from, why didn't the wheels wear away after 17 years non stop moving?) and are divided into leaders (immaculately dressed in military uniforms with obligatory assault rifles) who control everything & live at the front of the train and the plebs (dressed like cavemen) who live at the tail end of the train.

I just had to stop watching this pile of tripe after about 40 painful minutes.....absolutely nothing going for it at all, stretching credulity beyond all measure.

Allegedly written & directed by some guy called Bong.....which speaks volumes!

A very miserable offering that gets 1/10 from me.

Regards,

Jay.

PS: I suspect some bright spark will chime in and say it's his favourite Hollywood classic and he's watched it 17 times

Last night I watched Slow West, a film I recall enjoying a couple of years ago.

Set in 19th century America, it's the tale of a young Scottish lad searching for Rosie, the love of his life who settled in the American west with her father.

Thing is there is a bounty on Rosie & her father's heads due to a misunderstanding back home in Scotland.

Jay, the Scottish lad encounters several folk during his travels west, all of them unsavoury.

One in particular is a bounty hunter (Michael Fassbender) after his payday and uses Jay to lead him to it.

A slow paced film but not so slow as you get bored.

Worth a watch and deserves 8/10 from me.

Regards,

Jay.

There is a film and there is a Snowpiercer series as well. (It's in it's second or third season on TBS or TNT.) Evidently both use an obscure graphic novel from the 80's as the source material.

I like Sci-Fi... ALOT, but nothing about the ideas in the Snowpiercer comic, movie, or series makes any sense to me whatsoever. The trailers & commercials were enough to tell me I wasn't gonna like it.

And you're right, they all receive very high praise. I don't get it.

My random visual entertainment last night was a film called Red (Retired Extremely Dangerous).

A retired secret service employee (Bruce Willis) finds himself on the hitlist of current secret service agents.....now there's a plot I never came across before  .

Lots of huge explosions, massive firearms (with obligatory endless magazines), hilarious choreographed fight scenes (which our man Willis always comes out on top no matter the size of the opposition) and all the usual technical gizmos found in this kind of film.

Very much akin to a typical James Bond caper, very tongue in cheek (at least I thought so), and with the great Morgan Freeman & Brit Helen Mirren in leading roles....even the late Ernest Borgnine gets a look in  what was not to like?

A pretty silly bit of escapism but an entertaining one. Would I watch it again? Likely not but I did enjoy it......sort of.

All the above equates to 6/10 in my book.

Regards,

Jay.
