I think they are decoration to get rid of flaws in an otherwise stellar pipe. Doesn't affect my love of the pipe, though. Charatan did that many times, and I do own another one with similar cuts.

I rarely ever finish a tin. If something is good enough to make me keep coming back to it that I finish the tin I know I need to stock up.I can’t believe, for as long as I’ve been here, with all the blends I’ve purchased, I’ve never finished a tin, pouch, ounce, etc., of anything.
I get to enjoying, and then there’s another blend I want to try, and another, etc...
I think I enjoy sampling, maybe more, than settling down with a blend.
Like I say, I don’t eat chicken everyday. LOL
My last bowl packed of KBV Anne Cap, the first blend I’ve completed to date, in a 1931-1967 BBB Wyteway Billiard with a vulcanite stem.
When I think back to when I first picked up a pipe, I don’t think I ever completed a tin of anything back then either.
Maybe I’m just to picky... LOL

@Fralphog Army/Ordinance, accepted as his first choice. Bomb squad is his goal. Also, was Captain of the cadets (received the sabre), and Summa Cum Laude. He rocked ROTC at Gonzaga, absolutely thrived with it! Career Army is his plan.
