Well, I started out last night with G.L. Pease in my tin Bay Denmark apple, and believe it or not, you can make a teenie weenie little pipe, or any pipe last many many hours, IF, your slowly sipping.

So, after sipping every 10 mins, only half of the bowl done in 4 hours, I call that efficient packing/tamping. LOL 😆

So, after letting the pipe sit over night, I’m now smoking the other half.

Honest question. How many relights in those 4 hours?

Wind gusts up to 37mph; wind chill temps 10-20f degrees; so for a quick outside smoke ... some loosely packed Old Toby in an Erica smooth bent apple military orific stem (Pete 303 second) with 17mmx35mm chamber. This is a great pipe for a short smoke in high wind and the military stem makes maintenance easier. I also like my K&P Kapmeeer 999 rusticated bulldog (17mmx35mm chamber) but the Erica is slightly longer and somehow seems more versatile. Both are excellent pocket pipes and easy to maintain. While I do not have anywhere near the expertise of others in this forum I do believe every collection should have at least one of these shape pipes just for such occasions.

Well, I’m figuring a light every 5-10mins., so like maybe 7-10 an hour, give or take.

I smoke blends that have a fair amount of complexity, so I’ve never been one to try and keep the pipe lit.

I always only light a little, take some puffs and let it go out. On the occasion the blend doesn’t have bite and is mild, sometimes after lighting I’ll tamp a little to puff a little while longer, but only for a few minutes.

I also just need to take a break, and give my mouth a rest. I don’t find constant puffing enjoyable, and any blends I’ve smoked, the longer they stay lit, many of the complex nuances diminish so does the quality.

I believe high quality, complex blends are to be sipped and savored, with less flame, and only staying lit to sip and savor a few puffs. :)

If you smoke complex blends, try it like this next time, and you’ll notice more nuances in the blend to taste. ;)

Even a high quality Straight VA, as an example can be complex, with a wide spectrum of flavors;

bread, hay, grass, floral, citrus, fruit like, raisins, graham, and many more...

P.S. If there was a secret to all of this, I believe allowing the pipe and tobacco to cool all the way down, and then relighting brings out the best in complex blends.

Smoking some LNF in an Edwards Algerian Dublin with an army mount. The previous owner of this pipe clearly smoked aromatics, as it's got some ghosting. It's such a great smoker that I don't want to dedicate it to aromatics quite yet. I don't mind the extra sweetness with LNF, so I'm hoping a few bowls of this will clear it out. Drinking some English Breakfast tea alongside it.

The wind has picked up here as well, but I did not make such good choices for my second bowl of the day. Sutliff Victorian in my Big Ben Ranger. It tasted good enough at points, but I singed my mouth in a few places trying to get it lit, and then the wind made it burn a little hot the rest of the time.

My Dr Grabow Omega has very similar dimensions to your Erica -- that plus a windcap, and maybe a cube-cut blend, would have worked much better!
