Now smoking year 2010 Mac Baren Burley London Blend in a 2017 smooth, straight medium brown made in France Comoy’s Riband 298 Canadian with a black vulcanite tapered stem. A cup of hot tea is my drink. Watching The Penguin Pool Murders.

Most makers probably had at least one range of briar pipes with meerschaum lined bowls - the practice of lining briar bowls with meerschaum going back to at least the 1880s and is of course a practice that continues to this day with the Falcon bowls, the Peterson 'Kapmeer' etc., etc.
A meerschaum lining also found inside Calabash pipes of the early 20th cent. usually but not always with a metal bowl rim that served its purpose both as a decorative item and to protect the gourd and lining from damage caused by rough dottle removal:-

The pipe looks amazing! You coated it with olive oil? Interesting. I have been using olive oil on my vulcanite stems, applying it every 6 smokes or so with a paper towel and then rubbing it in with a dry paper towel. It seems to work well in keeping the stems looking nice and black instead of faded and gross.

Now smoking MacBaren Latakia Rolls in a Peterson Shannon 150.

I think I’m right in saying that Dunhill soak their Shell Briar pipes in olive oil. I use food grade mineral oil for that shiny new stem look but I might try the olive to see if there’s a difference.

I’ve had a couple more bowls through my new pipe (for want of positive ID I’m going to call it Christine after an old flame in Chicago, can’t put my finger on why though), and Christine is a great smoker. image.jpg
I’ve mainly been smoking Royal Yacht and Choc Flake but snuck some C&D Mocha in there too. Breaking in almost done thank heavens.
