Yesterday's evening smoke is actually three, and Buddy Mike joined in on my latest re-loading adventure as inspired by Douglas and his post on smoking cigar tobacco.
I don't use the word re-loading lightly, as guys who hunt and reload their own ammunition will understand better than anyone else what kind of procedures I go through when tobacco testing. Serious reloaders are nut jobs (more on that later in another thread
) as are a lot of pipers, it appears. They'll understand too. So will pensioners on a strict tobacco budget, especially from Canada.
(Next please.........)
Here's the gist of last night's first smoke. The boring details and the grand finale picture is below this shot, showing the tobacco from
one cigar in a bowl (a Precipice Caribbean, my so far favourite citgar), the only decent one I can afford at $90 per box of 25 from my Mohawk friends), a Caribbean in it's wrapper, and the pipe I chose to smoke the initial puffs on, a well broken in ashwood McQueen Russet, which I usually smoke English tobaccos in when I want a longer smoke in the afternoon (get about 35-40 minutes with a slow burning tobacco with this pipe). Seemed like the tool for the job.
Yeah. That's a heckova lot of tobacco from one cigar. Half a jar, as a matter of fact. Incredibly, the smoke was
excellent indeed, Mike agreed totally, and his first words were "An excellent morning tobacco. Wake-up stuff with coffee." As a matter of fact, it strongly reminded me of
TobaccoBarn's "Rockwell", my backup Navy fodder to "Black Frigate." And I don't have that much Rockwell either. So those of you who have read this so far will clearly see where this is going
So after this highly informative smoke, I celebrated the event with a small bowl of
Mad Fiddler. In my dedicated Ropp J16. JAnd quite frankly, I enjoyed this smoke waayyyy more in the evening than I do in the mornings, even though MF my preferred morning smoke. Not now lol. A slight on MF? No, not at all. I don't have a great sense of taste in the morning, and often miss a lot of subtleties of a fine tobacco like MF. I'll put it in the evenings or afternoons where it truly belongs.
Here's the next revealing photo, and the pipe in which I'll be smoking
Precipice Caribbean in for as long as my self-repaired Ropp 350 estate pipe holds out (and it's lookin' good)
MY NEW MORNING SMOKE
Yeah, boys and girls, that's a full jar of Precipice Caribbean cigar tobacco from only two cigars. Doing a little calculating price wise (which all you youngsters will find out about once you're on a fixed pension)
it comes out at about 1/3 the price as a jar of Sir Walter Raleigh, and 1/8th the price of a jar of Mad Fiddler which is not available in Canada unless you pay the shocking duty. Which in a couple of months I'll now be able to do as a birthday present to myself in April - 2 tins of MF and 2 tins of Black Frigate.
The third smoke enjoyed by Mke and myself was a trial of the tobacco from another cigar, a Phillies Blunt Berry, probably our most smoked cigar cuz we can afford them. Results inconclusive because we used one I found stashed in a pencil cup in my kitchen, and it was bone dry. Promising however. I'm sure you all see where this is going now!!!!!
I'll probably check in tonight with another off-the-waller. Many interesting and exciting things are planned!
And a hat's off, and huge thank you to Douglas, without whose post I'd never have done this. I owe you one!
