I never heard this fable before, where did you come across it?
C’mon @olkofri, inquiring minds ;)
It's an old Arab tale. I recall reading it somewhere, but can't remember exactly where. There are variants of it, and I reckon I just introduced one of my own—the number and the locale of the place Death/Pestilence is doing the killing vary too—Baghdad, Smyrna...

If you do a search for "fear killed the rest" you're bound to find some of those variants.

Here's one:

I live in a fairly rural area of western Virginia, but it's a good thing I don't like chicken, don't eat many eggs, and have ammunition for my meager firearm possession. It's just the wife and I at home now, so social distancing is relatively easy. I also had the foresight to buy two packages of toilet paper two weeks ago - that's enough to last us at least two months.

Our company rolled out electronic infrastructure a couple years ago to allow remote "working from home" when necessary, so we had that in place already (another bonus). Field work happens a few days a month, but that's fairly isolated (environmental engineering).

With all that said, it's still hard to distance yourself from close human interaction. Paying with cash, it gets handled for instance. There's the mail also, transfer of goods, etc.

I'm still baffled at the statistically significant mortality inequality between male and female victims of this virus. I'm wracking my brain to recall any other natural viral disease with such a preference for one sex over the other.

That is the real, actual, factual, irrefutably reason why we're indeed screwed.

I was gonna post the following in the 'Closed all pubs' thread, but refrained, thinking I'd be stirring some kind of pot, but heck...

First they closed the pubs, but I don't drink, so big freaking deal.
Then they closed the restaurants, but I don't eat out, so BFD.
Then they closed all retail, including my tobacconist, but I'm a guy and don't shop (besides I've cellared to the roof), so BFD.
Then they closed me down, but I read the news and said 'good thinking'!
Then they raised all my taxes and with my biz closed down I couldn't pay, so the gov't seized my assets... then, as I walked into the brave new world of western socialism, I realised the ones who died were the lucky ones.
Now it's a
real BFD!
Neat story, but that’s all it is.
If that’s the case then I am screwed as well
I think that’s sums up just about most of western civilization.

Hardly. I drew from actual, logical prognostics in order to come up with my itty bitty story: COVID 19 AND WORK... :: General Discussion - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/covid-19-and-work.75828/page-7#post-36096102

Some unwarranted fallacies I've seen/heard in the midst of this chaos:
  1. The scientist and experts can't/don't lie.
  2. Organisations like the WHO have no reason to mislead the public.
  3. The government handouts will make up for all the income lost during lockdown.
There are many others, but those are the most relevant to this thread.

Reporting from US hospitals:

Yeah, this should scare the shit out of us. Especially since we are so ill prepared for it. Hospitals are going to be totally overwhelmed.
And yeah, I wouldn’t call people in their 40’s “elderly”.

Well that’s not encouraging... but don’t worry, it’ll come to us all soon enough.

BTW, If you choose not to hang around, who’ll smoke all your tobacco then? ?
I live in the same city as Jay, so I think it should be me but I’m sure he has other arrangements. :(

I would really miss his awesome posts though.

I for one am taking this very seriously. My wife has been working from home for the last 2 weeks already. I have put the pipe down for the foreseeable future as well. I figure it is better to be safe.

My employer is not allowing me to work from home. My job is doable from home and I will fight this to the end should I need to. The workplace attitude is ridiculous, everyone thinks they are a hero. I said to my boss that if/when I get sick, what will this company do for me or my family? As expected, I received a typical bullshit answer. I will have an interesting week ahead

Heh, yeah. Trust me, not wanting to be a killjoy or a perverse pessimistic, but the shit I've seen this past week being implemented is more scary than the virus. Now the police is enforcing quarantines and people are actively encouraged to report any whom they suspect is breaching isolation to the cops; lockdowns; people frightened shitless and being unable to turn to each other or to mental health practitioners or their pastors for support, which is much worse; I could go on but you get the picture.

Province's premier was on the telly saying 'we will get through this!' I wish I had been at the press conference and asked him right there, 'HOW, Mr. Premier? As in how screwed are we gonna be after getting through this.'

I come from a medical family. I went to med school myself. I know about diseases and epidemics and safety measures. I am not advocating recklessness, or civil disobedience. I am taking preventive measures myself as I am in the at risk population with my medical conditions and age (past 40: no longer young, even if not elderly). I am willing to do what is in my power to avoid getting sick; not just because being sick sux, but because I must not be selfish and think of how my illness or death would impact my parents.

What I am NOT willing to do is to let them powers that be and fearmongers scare me to death and force me to live the way they want, rather than the way I know is best for me. THAT I will resist. So, I'm still smoking my pipe, drinking my ale, driving where I need to, and walking down the street taking pictures whilst I wait for my car to get fixed. And turning off my cell phone to avoid being sleep deprived or constantly distracted by BS governmental alerts that don't even apply to me.
