I think this is a good thread regardless of the OP's current status! Some good recommendations here, for the newbie and experienced pipers alike. I've long been a lurker here and enjoy threads like these. Just a note, I dislike HEAVY latakia blends and I prefer Virginias. I love well made Aros and am a BIG fan of Lakelands. Here's my 5 beginner friendly blends:
1) Rattray's Hal O' the Wynd

2) Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake

3) Lane 1-Q

4) Carter Hall

5) Peterson Connoisseur's Choice
I always enjoy seeing what others rate as starter tobaccos and usually see a few blends listed that I end up trying and enjoying. Necro ON!

I thought the rule was that this thread only got reincarnated once every five years.
I am glad to see Hal O' The Wynd getting the credit it deserves.
Lane 1-Q was not a tobacco for me, so I suggest Prince Albert instead for the vanilla Burley fix, even if it's not really a Burley (apparently mostly Burley, with some Orientals and Virginias).

Which broaches the question: Are "man caves" manly, or an attempt to assert manliness (either in the presence or absence of same)?

Tag! You're it. It's your duty to come back in four and a half years and update the thread.

Perdurabo, these are supposed to be lists for new smokers. While those are all great tobaccos, a few of them are pretty finicky to deal with for the inexperienced!

Well.

That is a very nice list, for the "new guy"!

I like it... as it will send the piper away from the starting line on a meandering wooded path.

Kudos.

Hey, if your gonna start smoking a pipe, you might as well start smoking the right stuff.
Cliff notes for the uninitiated:
BlackWoods flake: Allow it to sit out and air dry from 30 minutes to 4 or 5 hours. Try different dry times for different profiles.
GL Pease Gaslight: Cut the Plug in thin flakes and rub out. Let this be the second tobacco you try.
C&D Haunted Bookshop: this will be the first tobacco you smoke. Smoke this stuff for a few weeks, until you master the mechanics of packing a pipe, smoking slowly, etc. This tobacco will replace every suggestion given to you as your first smoke. It's a hidden gem, it reveals itself in stages. Pm me when you want the next initiation into burley. :puffy:
GH&Co Ennerdale: you need an aromatic in your arsenal, what better aromatic than almond oil, lavender, vanilla and various fruits. Yes this stuff is the bees knees. The tobaccos are exquisite.
SG Cabbies Mixture: you need a Va/Per, don't fuck with the Mainstream crap. Go big and do it different.
Or you could smoke Lane 1-Q and Carter Hall and probably never make it far in the world of pipe smoking, Just a suggestion. :puffpipe:

I want to play! In no particular order:
English - Dunhill Nightcap

Va/Per - Escudo

Va - Orlik Golden Sliced

Burley - Solani Aged Burley Flake 656

Aro - Tewksbury Hobbit's Weed .......Recently discontinued, but pipesandcigars.com has a "match" blend that I've heard is pretty close. I have yet to try it but guess I'll find out how close it is when I run out of the Tewksbury I have in the cellar.

Your making it real hard to resist opening new tins. Have a tin of Cabbie's Mixture about a year or so old now, but have so many others opened up have been just letting it sit in the cellar. Hawky.....stop it

Chuck Norris is lucky, I light up a bowl of Haunted Bookshop and everybody in the house wants to interrupt me. I have to admit that my Haunted Bookshop diet has been interrupted by Pease Fillmore, C&D Purple Cow, and Blackwoods Flake.
