I think a number of tobaccos go without saying. Most of us will try 1Q, Carter Hall, Nightcap, and Prince Albert when and where available. So I'd tend to suggest blends or single-leaf a little further out. These aren't required "likes." Some won't like any of them. But they might not try them otherwise.
Tobac-Manil Semois, both the thick cut and the medium cut.

Nat Sherman's 536, their refined subtle but complex English, in either tin or bulk (from the store)

PC Midtown series Chestnut, a pouch or tub tobacco, blended by Russ O. after the classic but discontinued Walnut, non-aro

GLP Triple Play, a plug tobacco in a tin, hearty and sophisticated

C&D Billy Budd, a popular favorite but missed by many, with cigar leaf (but doesn't taste like a cigar in particular)
I don't think there are any "required" blends. This is the golden age of tobacco blending (and single leaf offerings) ...as near as I can tell, so selection is an adventure, and your all-time favorite may not be particularly popular with the pipe tobacco market. The glory is, you can either buy, or mix, the blend that's nearly your ideal, and adjust or change this at will.

Those are great suggestions, MSO (stands for "must surmise objectively").
I recommend Prince Albert because it is a great learner tobacco. Also, kind of tasty. Forgiving of mistakes. And instructive in its internal variety.

"any 5 i aint smoked yet is my short answer. it's a journey, not a destination and every once in a while you'll make a wrong turn, but that's the fun of it."
I have to agree with this statement. Smoke what you think sounds good or interesting to you. Ultimately you'll decide for yourself after trying different tobaccos which ones you like. I found that my tastes and preferences for tobaccos change over time and other things affect how I appreciate any given tobacco at any given time - pipe used, mood, weather, how much time I have to smoke said tobacco, etc.

Or you could just do what I do and buy everything. That way you will eventually find something you like.
Oh and this is the 600th post.

Codger blend refers to tobaccos normally associated with "old-timey" smokers. The kind you could generally find at a drugstore, IE. Prince Albert, Half and Half, Carter Hall, etc.

the top 5 tobaccos to have on a "noobs" list
OK, so we're talking about a list for people new to the hobby, not our favorites or the rarest stuff we can find.
1. Lane Limited - BL/WB

2. Sutliff - Medium English #502

3. Peterson - Irish Oak

4. McClellan - HH Old Dark Fired

5. Dunhill - Flake
Should cover the major groups there, which will help you both learn how to smoke this stuff and see what you like, which is the point of this exercise.

Though they don't make it anymore, Bond Street. I would buy that for the packaging alone. Reminds me of Monopoly, Give My Regards to Broadway, my Grandpa days. A true Codger.
As to English, Nightcap as mentioned, but I find I really like Dunhill Aperitif. 'tis not as full throated as Nightcap, so would not be too much before or after a meal.
