If you can get yourself a tin of Erinmore Mixture try it, I think you'll like it being a new pipe smoker. It has a lovely fruity scent and is made with really good quality tobacco. I use it to mix with other tobaccos and also smoke it all by itself.
In South Africa we have a very popular old brand of pipe tobacco called Rum & Maple. I find mixing the Erinmore with the R&M works a charm and produces a very smokable mixture. Being a new pipe smoker I guess you're just going to have to experiment a lot to find what suits your taste buds.
We really don't get much of a selection of good quality imported tobacco out here and the few tobacconists that do have "some" selection are very expensive indeed. I would love to try some of those mentioned in this thread but alas, I somehow do not see me finding them easily.

Again it depends on your taste. for me I like to keep a balance between aromatics and english blends
As for aromatics, My favourite has to be Captain Black: White and Cherry blends.. and if White isn't available you can switch to Royal.. it's good quality, smokes well and quite cheap
As for English blends: YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH DUNHILLS. start by picking the 5 choice: My mixture 965, Nightcap, Early morning pipe, Standard and Royal Yacht.
unfortunately we don't have B&M tobacconists in Egypt, so I can't say anything about local blends. But that's my take on tobacco so far.
I tried other types like Erinmore mixture, which so far seems like a mix between aromatic and english..It is nice, smokes well and tastes nice.. but I wouldn't call it a favourite

top 5 tobaccos to have on a

"noobs" list and why?
Right!
1. Dunhill -- Standard Mixture -- because you must know what an English is.

2. Dunhill -- Royal Yacht -- experience the best of Virginias.

3. Middleton -- Prince Albert -- the easiest blend to start with and learn on.

4. Peterson -- Irish Oak -- a good subtle Va/Per.

5. Hearth & Home -- Freight Train -- enter the eternal fire.

Start with tobacco blends that start with the letter A and smoke your way to the bottom of the alphabet. You'll find 5 that you like.

Ok, here is my answer. Try five of whatever catches your eye, because it will take you quite a while before you taste anything anyways. Just grab five of whatever sounds good, but be forewarned, it doesn't matter, because it will taste like smoke, hot air, or nothing at all, depending on what genre it is. I am not going to suggest anything. One, because I don't want you wasting a blend that I admire in your newbie fumblings, and two, you'll blame me when you don't taste it or don't like it. :puffy:

On these necro-bumps, I always wonder if the guy who started this thread four years ago gets a notification that someone has replied to his ancient post, and does he still smoke a pipe.
The real question is whether he is still a member of this fine pipe smoking community.

C.E., good suggestions, but I wonder if it does not make sense to suggest the most accessible options?

Did I forget Five Brothers?
BTW -- this is 1986 speaking -- if someone has left a community, what you want to do is reduce barriers to re-entry, not focus too much on the absence...

Nate, good insight. Frame it this way: a friend asks me what he can do to get into pipe smoking. I realize he's unaware of the whole network of P&C/SPC style companies, and instead suggest to him the most accessible options, so he can get started, and then branch out.
Am I moron, or mere pragmatist, or (worse, feared by most) realist?
