Yes, new Grabows, especially to me the Royaltons which have good acrylic stems, and especially the bulldog, which has artful shaping of the bowl and stem. They smoke well with the filter, without, or with an adaptor if you like a slightly more restricted but non-filter draw. Hard to beat it for the money.
EWA, smaller French pipes retailed by Iwan Ries, are extra reasonably priced and high French quality. You can get them as churchwardens or pocket pipes, and everyone needs one or two for sampling, and for full length smokes with flake/plug.

Jirsa and Neerup don't seem to get enough love

I'd have to agree with you about Jirsa, Cortez. I bought one 10-12 years ago at my local B&M for about $70 if memory serves. It was always a great smoker and I mourned its loss/sale for a few years until I found it buried recently and have started smoking it again. Great hunk of briar with really good engineering

Brebbia - No one ever mentions them here. My Brebbia Avanti is a desert island pipe. Smokes wonderfully. Flavors come alive like few other pipes. Best fit of stem to mortise of any pipe that I own, always consistent, never gets looser or tighter. Wide open draw. You should be so lucky as to own a pipe this good. And nobody talks about Brebbia.

Just spent some time looking at the Brebbia offerings on smokingpipes.com and noticed that quite a number of them are 9mm filter pipes. Wonder if that's why they don't get any love. :?

Now I got this right, so my answer is quite a simply: French pipes are pretty bad underated, especially the following brands, Ropp&Genod and Jeanette, despite the fact that all them are made in ST Claude France, + 1 for Blakemar Briars England

Sable', Brebbie went through a time a few years ago when their exports to the U.S. were oddly designed, with bulging uneven shanks and other quirks in shaping. Since then, I've looked at whole sets of their pipes online that had none of that, but they were pushing it for a while, and I think it lost them following in the U.S. I remember looking at them at the TAPS pipe show and enjoying their quirkiness, but feeling no impulse to buy whatever. I'm glad you have some good ones, and I think they can come back strong if they stick with fewer oddities in design. Just my notion. I had wondered what became of them.

i'll second la'anatra, first one was so good, had to get 2 more, can pick up estates on the cheap.
Cheraponov pipes are mostly ignored, but I have been impressed by the quality/price .
Estate pipes on eBay...bought some wonderful pipes at less than 50% of new price, follow the auctions..great pipes can be had at very reasonable prices. Determine what you like and follow all the auctions for that pipe maker, you can get a much nicer pipe than when paying retail prices.

I used to say vintage Kaywoodie, but everyone is figuring that out lately. I'll say new Kaywoodie. After about 2000, the new Kaywoodie pipes are really good. Third, I'm not naming specifics because I don't want my inexpensive pipes disappearing before I buy them, but new carvers. Taking a chance on new carvers is underrated.

Viprati, Brebbia & L'Anatra.
Mine are all smooth finish with outstanding grain. All are in the top end of the range and all would put a Dunhill*** to shame and come close to a Dunhill ***** in grain.
