If you keep a cat, don't deprive it of food with the idea that it will make it hunt mice. They do that naturally, for sport. Keeping them fed will give them energy. My more plump cat is the most methodic mouser, taking over from a little female who was the vole exterminator, and she too was a lusty food appreciator.

Once I had some leftover popcorn from the movies, which I rolled up the bag and left in my car overnight. I forgot about it, and after a few days I remembered and went back to my car. A tiny hole had been chewed in the corner and all the popcorn was missing.

I drove around with a mousetrap in my back footwell for a week, nothing.

Then when it came time to do the seasonal tire changeover, I noticed a mummified mouse corpse stuck between the brake rotor and caliper. Poor guy was cooked.

OK, so...NO, I am not going to smoke that stuff, as tempted as I may be. It was left in the Mylar bag because I had been blending my favorite creation "Love Canal", which consists of:

Love Canal 2.jpg
McClelland 510030
D&R Acadian Bright (Perique-processed Canadian Bright)30
D&R Decade Perique15
Dark Fired: 2013 Crop15
Oriental: Izmir wlt.com15
Totals100.00%105

I left a few ounces out in a bag, and apparently mice can smell through Mylar. Or they smelled what was on the package. Either way, it has inspired me to think about a shag blend that I'll call... "Mouse Nest".

Here in Arizona, packrats are a real problem for behavior such as this. A lot of people keep lights on under their hoods at night to prevent such intrusions.

We had one get into the Subaru a couple of years ago, and the only way we knew was once it had died. I tore apart the fender, we took it to the mechanic, but nothing. Nobody could figure out exactly where it was. After 2-3 weeks, the smell died out, and last year I suppose I sold the car to its new owner with rat skeleton and all.

I had a friend who built houses out of reclaimed lumber which he bought at sites of tear-downs, and he found troves of interesting items in the walls of old houses including buttons off Confederate uniforms and other shiny and sparkly things the pack rats had collected.

I concur re the pack rats! After two expensive wiring repairs I got the intense blinking light contraptions(can't remember the name, but it might be something like Rat-Away?). No problems since. I put the battery version under the car, and the version that connects to the car battery under the hood.
Apparently the wire wrap is tasty to rats. Why can't the manufacturers make them taste and smell like Granger?

Yeah, but the coyotes!
I live an hour outside Philadelphia and yes, we have coyotes. But it wasn't coyotes that got our Sweetie. It was mouse poison. Thirty year old mouse poison, put out years before we bought this house, and carefully stashed in the walls by the industrious intended victims. Thirty years later, another mouse found it, ate it, ran outside for water and Sweetie preemptively killed that mouse and ate it, poison and all.
