"'American Colonies: The Settling Of North America' by Alan Taylor"
Agree, highly recommended book.

Indians were real sick and mean towards one another. They were more than happy to jack over other tribes. The locals were greatful to see Cortez and Pizarro show up to settle the score with the Aztecs and Incas. It is not so simple, whitey bad, Indian good beyond measure. Somehow we went from the psychology of tobacco cellaring/hoarding to whitey was mean to Indians. Never miss an opportunity to "go there."

But as usual, we veer off the course into the idiotic and threads get closed.

And then when I read some complainer declares how evil people are labeling an entire population and species because of the actions of a few, and over such a puerile matter as this, it really just makes me want to puke.
My thoughts exactly, you can hate your self all you want but don't blindly include the rest of us for what others have done.

Agreed

History abounds with examples of indigenous peoples relishing their traditions of genocide, slavery, and exploitation. Usually the whining doesn't start until someone who is better at those things shows up.

Jimeny Crickets!! You guys are all so easily distracted that one mention of a book and you're all rehashing ancient history, ha ha.

Anyways, get back on track, start a new thread for the other stuff, or we will have to do the mod thang. It's a good thread, so I think it deserves a warning before...

Back on topic: I'm not sure who's nuttier, people who cellar or people who don't.
People who cellar because burley doesn't age well.

Holy crap I can't believe how far off topic this has gotten.
If someone wants to cellar good for them. If someone doesn't want to cellar good for them. If someone is able to purchase tobacco that is hard to find but I couldn't then good for them.
And that 'war' has in itself turned smoker against smoker which I think is very sad and depicts human nature at its worst.
Were talking about tobacco here for christ sake. We aren't killing each other. OMG I couldn't get any Penzance because 4 guys bought the 4 bags that were available. Puhlease. Gimme a break. Who cares? Maybe I'll have better luck next time.
Time for me to walk away from this thread.

The one who is doing whatever they're doing purely because of what other people think and do. Whatever that may be.

My sincere apologies to any and all I may have offended or caused nausea to...that was never my intention.
I merely wanted to say that folks need not hurriedly buy up what they can when they can because they can, there is plenty to go around for everyone if we all shop sensibly. I hate to see that suppliers have run out of a blend just as we all do. I just shop with my fellow smoker in my mind when I make my selection. Is that so wrong?
"Jay, I implore you to read more."
Ash, my bookshelves are already heaving :puffy:
Regards,
Jay.

I definitley would like cellaring more, but no way, most all my free' money went to new pipes, yet here tobacco cost are sky rocketed, so only dependable way to have any tobacco home stock is to rely on my German supplier and only, if not, some good and costly OTC are still availabe 1,75oz :$17 not much of sense in cellaring such stuff as Mc Baren Golden Blend, Amphora or Greve Gilbert Hamiltons..

Good idea.

Jay, you are one of my favorites to read, because you just say it like you think it, a lot like me, raw, unfiltered at times, and honest. I think that a few of us have joked around about buying up all of something. I did it as the days were ticking away for the release of War Horse. I've seen Harris brag about buying up all of the Klondike Gold when it came out, but I don't think he was actually to blame. Surely they released more than 100 tins. Ha ha,. but maybe he did. I can't say with 100% certainty. But, I know that before I ever had a chance to even try Penzance that when the Briary would get in their 10 bags, it would sell before I could even get someone to pick up the phone there. It was frustrating. But, I put that on Esoterica for not meeting demand with product. But, then again if everyone had ample access to all of the Esotericas, 75% of everyone who tried it, would be able to find something that they like better. It's a weird world.
I will herewith promise to never buy all of any one tobacco in the entirety of my country.
Come on guys, this is a pledge I think we could all make. :puffy:

Except maybe those people who live in small countries with only one tobacco shop. Then, I think even Jay would give you a pass.
Does that work?

Not to be contrary but...the current run on Esotericas (past several years) has proven that statement is false for certain blends. The online retailers limit (1 bag or tin) customer purchases and yet it runs out quickly. Even if we were to take people who cellar or hoard out of the customer pool, I imagine it would still sell out rather quickly.
Once a blend reaches a mythical status suppliers are hard-pressed to keep up with demand and this feeds the frenzy.

If Skip couldn't get it after, say, 3 months, couldn't he just turn your pre-payment into a store credit? Then, after you use the store credit on something else you want, you could start the clock all over again. No harm, no foul, I would think.
I don't know why anyone is even raising an eyebrow over meandering off topic and blowing things out of proportion. We could have a riot over two raindrops meandering down a windowpane, for God's sake. It's part of our charm, and part of what keeps me here (patronizing the site sponsors, BTW!). Some other forums are artificially sterile to the point of not being engaging conversation, even about pipes. We don't strain the leash on purpose, usually; we do it because our minds think of stuff other than just pipes and tobacco the whole time we're logged in.

Hey, I'm not against having the train swerve on the tracks or taking a detour, but when it decides to start gliding sideways with everyone on board rocking the dang'd ol' thing back and forth, well... then that just gets scary. :puffy:
...talking to Skip about store credits, ha ha. His eyes just glaze over as if I had started speaking Russian.

Oh, I'm not talking about the mods keeping things between the lines. I'm just surprised that some people seemed surprised.

Cosmic, et. al, forgive my parting shot: Whitey bad, Indian good-- my example was only used as the first thing coming to mind to counter rose colored glasses. Yes, Indians annihilated one another for the same reasons we engaged in that same behavior. Culture's with the superior technology always dominated and still dominate. I was not being moralistic, just citing an example of greed as I also said these examples were too numerous to count-- which includes all cultures and races. Yes, humans are something of a dichotomous bunch-- philanthropic and at the same time domineering towards one another. Affecting a Nixon accent: Let me make one thing perfectly clear-- I am not a moralist!
