"The Wire" started out really great for for me but the last few episodes really petered out.
"The Soprano's" was good, not as good as "Breaking Bad" for me.
"Better Call Saul" is really good.
"El Camino" was good too.

+1 on Better Call Saul. One of my favorite comedies.

Along the lines of disappointments like Sons of Anarchy... Yellowstone! I really like Kevin Costner, and the concept of a ranching family making their way through local politics, crime, etc. to preserve their ranching way of life. The series starts off strong, but just gets worse. The writing and dialogue in the only two episodes I saw of season 3 (the current season) was so horrible I'm pretty sure that it must be different writers than the previous seasons.

The first couple of seasons start strong, but the series lost me after that. Also, I noticed they do almost every scene transition with a cell phone call, it's kind of lazy.

Anyone got any thoughts on The Wire? Seems an awfully long series though it appears to be very popular with Amazon reviewers.

Regards,

Jay.?

Saw the Wire a few years ago, as I remember it was verry good, probably top 10. Well worth a watch.

Also the HBO series OZ from 1997 is amazing if you haven't seen it, such good acting and characters.

There's a women's prison show from Australia, "Wentworth", that I enjoy more than "Orange is the New Black". I've seen the first 7 seasons and I think season 8 is on Netflix now. Not sure if it's on DVD. It's worth checking out.

"One of the best shows ever made! The 2nd season is the weakest,"

Nomad, interesting that you pointed out the weakness of season 2 as that pretty much tallies with the reviews that I read on Amazon!I

"Also the HBO series OZ from 1997 is amazing if you haven't seen it,"

Gecko, I did read up on that box set as it sounded interesting but was very much put off by the allegedly regular male on male sex scenes, that pretty much put the kibosh on that one for me, not my scene at all ?

Scott, the series 'Wentworth' was shown on UK TV some years ago, it was pretty much like our 'Coronation Street', ie an afternoon soap for bored housewives ?

Thanks again guys, most helpful.

Regards,

Jay.?

I'd get The Sopranos before Sons of Anarchy.
It set the standard for television drama that all others now follow. (In my opinion!)

Edit- Well, I'm late for on this one haha. Hope you enjoy all those shows! Careful, you'll find yourself saying "just ONE more episode" at 3:42 am on more than one occasion ...

The Pacific and Band of Brothers are fantastic in my opinion (not talking historical accuracy here).

Sons of Anarchy is a good show, but it's more light entertainment with not much to think about basically.
I wouldn't watch The Pacific after a long day of work, but SoA I would switch on to switch off - if you catch my drift.

One of my top 5 shows of all time. But I live in Maryland, near Baltimore, so the story lines for each season are pretty familiar. I was also a fan of the tv show "Homicide", same director (I believe) and also shot in Baltimore.
I don't have many box sets, two, "The Sopranos" and "The Wire". We'll rewatch The Wire this winter, I have not seen any episodes since they were live on HBO.

I tried watching "Marcella" on Netflix (British show, 4 seasons). The British accents were so severe, I couldn't stick with it and it oddly had two very different story lines. Did I give up too soon?

OZ is an awesome series. It's a pretty violent show but it has some great characters and storys. J. K. Simmons as white supremacist leader Vern Schillinger was an amazing bit of acting.

I don't know about this particular show, but I do know Americans can struggle with UK accents. Here's a 1 star review of Trainspotting I copied from American Amazon

Not subtitled! Why?
"There are no subtitles and since they speak cockney it is impossible to understand. What movie this day and age does not come with subtitles?"

I am a cockney and this made me laugh. They have thick Scottish accents, definitely NOT cockney. That's East London?.

Chris, on a review of one of the box sets I recently purchased (I forget which) someone was complaining about the lack of subtitles because the series was set in Baltimore and apparently Baltimore English is so different from regular American English it was hard to understand!

Also got the entire Line Of Duty set arriving today. Not sure if that made it across the pond but it's a terrific British series about an anti police corruption squad.

GF and I loved Line of Duty. Streamed it on Britbox, Too bad you probably cannot subscribe, living in Britland as you do!

Ixnay on Sons; yay on The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad,The Killing, True Detective, Fargo (movie and series) and more.

My heirs won't have to worry about how to handle disks. I stream every thing, and have no interest in owning any. Some of it is in UHD, which beats Blu-ray in picture quality.
