314 is my Fav all-around go-to do-it-all pipe I've found yet.
I'm on my way to filling a stand that holds a dozen of them.
But I'll not have one without a P-lip.

Welcome to the club, mostly, sort-of.......
Wondering if I'll be around here long enough to see you actually get a P-lip, it could happen!
Didn't think I'd ever see you get a Pete...
Yeah I really didn't like them in the beginning. But I know so much more now, and should have a different point of view.

I had one that was given to me by a friend years ago, that he attempted to restore. But it was blue. I held on to it for years, and occasionally put it in my teeth. I loved how it hung, but never smoked it, and threw the pipe away.
You know how I like em small, and have thought about buying another one for a while now. This one is as plain as it gets. I wanted a sandblasted one, but don't like the dark colors.
So here's another chance with a new 314.

This will be my 6th pipe ordered in 3 months. I literally need to buy another pipe stand soon.
I make pipe stands. Lol

Huh, now looking back at the pipe description, I'm just now noticing it was listed as a plip. Guess I ordered it in a hurry! So I guess when I get it I'll find out if the description was wrong, or the pictures were wrong! 🤣

That is interesting-if description is right, so much for the “picture of the pipe you’re getting” days…

Not a system if it doesn't have a P-lip, so don't judge the "system" if yours doesn't...

I had a 2012 peterson Christmas 999 that had the well in it, and no plip. Is that well not a system pipe?

Nope. Graduated bore P Lip is a requirement to meet the System design that Charles Peterson patented. Otherwise it's just a reverse calabash.

I would go further to say that without a chimney or "tubular extension" as it was described in the original patents, that sits in the reservoir below the draft hole that a system isn't a true functioning system IE there is no cyclonic actions of smoke moving about in the reservoir causing the wicking of moisture from the smoke before traveling through the stem. I own a system spigot but it doesn't function the same as my Deluxe and premier systems with the chimneys. I consider system spigot half systems or improved reverse calabashes.

Any peterson system smoker will know what I'm talking about, even those modern acrylic stem deluxe systems don't work as well unless you put a little effort into sanding and buffing the tenon so there is less of a wear gap ensuring the chimney sits in the reservoir below the draft hole.

A system reservoir should have moisture in it when you're finished smoking and should require a cleaning, unless you're smoking your tobacco very, very dry.

The actual system pipe patent can be viewed here, pay attention to mention of the tubular extension

He later improved the design with the P Lip.

And of course this in depth blog post from Mark Irwin.

Interesting! I never knew there was so much to the "System". Literally thought some guy drilled a pipe wrong, and named it as such 🤣

So I guess I'll come back and tell ya what I actually got here! Lol

OK so I got my pipe today, 3 days earlier than expected! Thank you spcom.

It is indeed a system pipe. I think the angle of the stock pictures just made it look like it wasn't.

I was a little disappointed by the drilling, but was able to clear the excess with my pipe tool. I know this is a lower end pipe anyways, and I bought it for a beater pipe. So I'm good with it. Smokes really well so far.

It's an extremely light piece of briar. It almost feels fake. But I like them light. I think this will be a fine addition to my stable.

That drilling looks pretty correct and standard for a system pipe brother. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.
