What’s your guys’ thoughts on modern kaywoodies, especially the stems?
No expert and not overly picky but I've experienced stems I hated, NOT Kaywoodie's though. I'm very much enjoying mine. These were out on my porch table not very clean in fact the red root bent is being smoked now. Stems holding up fine in FL heat on the porch, smooth not rough edges, good bit fit. A couple got a bit loose but not to the point of concern and smoking firmed it right up in 5 - 10 min. Again these are porch beaters, but less than a year old.

That light brown one is very nice, especially for a porch beater. What line is it from?

Majestic acorn (bent?) I believe. It does have a couple small fills (away from my line of sight, which is a must, lol). I really enjoy them all but a likely favorite is that billiard red-root with deep swirling cuts, the size and feel in hand is just plain... nice.

Unsmoked prewar Kaywoodie on smokingpipes? But why do they say pre1950s? Don’t they know better? Or am I wrong? https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/united-states/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=559474
4 digit Supergrain by its stamping, but “Imported Briar” and the font look to be at very end of 4 digit to me. I’d say ‘39-40 but I’m new at all this.
I’d not spend that kinda money without a good view of stinger (probably stamped “Drinkless” on a not giant 4 hole).
Cool pipe though.

More than likely. They came about because of briar shortages from the war. So some could have been earlier but not in the catalogs.
I wonder if they were also trying to compete with Custombilt? Expand to cover that style? I’ve a weird little early carved Kaywoodie that I can see being the product of a shortage, but the whole line of pipes in the catalogue? They much have been sellers?

It is hard to say who was competing with whom. A lot of Kaywoodie finishes were taken by other companies, some were developed independently, and sometimes an employee of a factory moved and took tricks with them.

This Kaywoodie Supergrain that has been taken down from auction - I'm just curious about it and so is the owner. So, a 4-digit shape-number and a push tenon. Does anyone have an idea of the era of this one? I think the box and catalogue he shows don't match the era. ? | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/334954061832?mkpid=0&emsid=e11051.m43.l1123&mkcid=26&ch=osgood&euid=692a8a0a2cc5493c9d4388cbd5541340&bu=43184235586&osub=-1%7E1&crd=20230720053559&segname=11051&nma=true&si=VDtuJ60CUJj1U0J8iXJ6gpY7x6M%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Likely late wartime production, push bits were made due to the aluminum shortages.

Maybe 1935-38 (matches the stampings and shank logo) parts that were put together late wartime, sans aluminum (as Fletch noted)??
The tenon on my wartime Flame Grain Meershaum is different, and it’s got a “top of stem” logo, “Imported Briar” and two digit number that match post-38 all unlike the $900 oddity you linked.

All I know is that so far I’ve learned that when it comes to Kaywoodies, there are definite indicators of age/era…..that is until that all gets tossed when they become very indefinite😆

The really strange thing is that the prefix 51 is Screw in Drinkless Kaywoodie Super Grain, black vulcanite stem, Miami Brown finish (1930-1939 or 40). I have seen other push tenon SuperGrain pipes but they tend to be magnum sizes not medium sizes. I suspect this this was as @Sobrbiker assembled from older existing stock during the war.

I had my ebay guy pull the trigger on these two. Both are 76B S shapes and are unsmoked. They will remain that way until I decide to toast something special. The smooth is the Heirloom and the blast is the Antique. If anyone has an unsmoked Embassy 76B S let me know, unsmoked please. :)

Those are seriously nice! I wonder if they were still in production in ‘67-I may have to quest for an unsmoked one for my birth year pipe!!
