Man, these are gorgeous. I hope to add a Charatan to my collection one day.
I totally jinxed myself. About a month ago I was talking on here about how I was lucky that I only had TAD and not PAD - well, that's changed.
Well, I only have one Charatan, but that's only because I've yet to find another that I like as much. I've also posted it in the British Pipes section. And a few of the members hear probably already recognize me, even though I'm new here....LOL...not sure if that's a good thing.
No discussion of Charatans would be complete without mentioning their um.. unpredictable grading standard.
This pipe didn't make the cut:
(Also, please ignore the drab, dull, and greenish cast of the photos. The host I'm using has issues in that regard. The pipe's actual color is the lovely, deep, iron oxide cinnamon-red that we all know and love.)
Just got my first Charatan: a 2615X (saddle stem) Belvedere. I think it's '61-'77 because the C penetrates the P, and maybe even '61-'65, 1st Lane era (3rd era altogether), because it says LONDON ENGLAND, not City of London. I hope Ken Barnes will correct me if I'm all wrong. It's super light. Thought I might hate the 'post office red' top coat but I don't. Maybe time has mellowed the color. Haven't smoked it yet.
Well I had no intentions or thoughts of collecting Charatans, blissfully seeking out Linkman's era Dr. Grabows was enough for me. Admiring these beauties on the forum was entertaining, a look at some rare and unobtainable, to me, vintage British pipes was all I expected. Fast forward to Ashdigger ( alias Enabler) posting some pipes for sale. I never look at these sale threads but the urge to have a look was not to be ignored. As result of Tim's very generous nature I am now a collector of sorts. These arrived this morning and I'm overwhelmed, ecstatic and overjoyed. I can't thank you enough Tim :worship:
Just got a new (to me) 381DC Lane-era back from Mike Myers at Walker Pipe Repair. He does great work. Here are some before and after pics. Smokes great too.
