A seller at Richmond last year (Chance @ Treasurepipes?) had a number of new Charatans. They were quite large but the workmanship looked terrific. I tried to strike a deal on a trade for a Castello G Bulldog, but we didn't work it out. (In hindsight, it would have been too large for me, as was the G-sized Castello)

Here's my Charatan Special Group 4. As I get deeper into the collection to sell some of it away, I fear this is one that I might have some trouble letting go of (along with the Upshalls)! My lone Charatan, as well, though I'm not sure why...?
That's a terrific bulldog, Al.

My most recent Charatan purchase: A Special S FH, showing some great straight grain. I believe it's probably from just before the Lane era as the "bite" is quite thick and not DC. The vulcanite is very soft and comfortable though, as you'd expect of a Charatan. This is a restoration project and I'm looking forward to working on it and adding some more pictures when it's finished.

Here is my little group of Charatan's. From Supreme to Executive to Selected and finally to the lowly Belvedere. And you know which one is the best smoker? Although they all smoke just fine, the little Belvedere is the best of the group.

Here's my Extra. Frankly, it's a horrible pipe. Smokes hot regardless of blend or when I'm sipping. the walls of the bowl are thin considering the size. The nadir of the marque.

I have seven Charatans, all wonderful smokers. Shame on Dunhill for buying the brand and closing it down. These were great pipes that should still be available to the pipe smoking public. Let me see if I can get photos of all seven of them in here without making this post too picture heavy.
Herewith the first, a Belvedere Apple:

Then this 1/4 bent Belvedere acorn, acquired cheaply because it was rejected at the last minute because the bore was slightly off. Still smokes like a Charatan, though.

This Belvedere bent pot has been a good friend for over thirty years:

I'm going to close this posting down, so it doesn't become overloaded with images, and then put some more pipes in my next posting.

And now for some more Charatans – you can never have too many. :puffy:
Notice the grain on this lovely Lane Era Executive shape number 84, the Barrel Bowl Poker, aka "The Ton," a reference to its size. It's good for a two hour smoke, and is so perfectly engineered, that it burns clean down to the bottom, leaving only a repository of fine gray ash. Fred Hanna, eat your heart out!

This sandblast Skater is stamped DC, indicating that it was manufactured after downhill took over the company. See my comments elsewhere on this subject. Still a fine pipe, and that may have been what gave Dunhill such agita.

I bought this lovely Lane Era Special, known as The Burlington, shape 372 in 1972, while I was in graduate school. It is particularly fond of the late lamented Balkan Sobranie, and misses it terribly. I dropped it and broke the stem some years ago, so you can see the replacement acrylic stem that was put on. Notice, however, the beautiful Birdseye.

This is the last of my collection, a large bowled Dublin that is very fond of cube cuts.

bump.

Al started this thread. Are there so few Charatan's in the club? Surely we have some members who can display their pipes.

Mine are definitely not in pristine condition--I've smoked them, some of them for over 40 years, and loved every minute of it!
BTW, check out Fred Hanna's collection--truly magnificent.
Now where is this B&M you mentioned--and does it have a back door?

At any rate, where is the business located? We don't have a decent B&M in Connecticut, and I"m always pleased to visit one on my travels and make purchases there.

Came to this thread late, but hopefully this will bump some more interest. I only have 3 Charatans - one 1/8 bent Belvedere 260DC, a 1/8 bent Perfection 1160DC, and this beautiful Extra Large Freehand Relief dublin which is just superb. It can turn even the most run-of-the-mill Balkan into a delight. I'm currently enjoying GLP Cairo - which isn't at all unpleasant! - in this pipe, very kindly gifted to me by Tim (rsuninv):
