Very nice ring grain on the blast.Heres mine, it was a 109. No grade stamp, I believe they were known as "rough". I gave it my buddy, Dave Jacobsen, who passed away last year. He had a pretty big pipe collection, I always wonder where those pieces went. I'd love to have this one back.

I recently bought a Tilshead (Upshall second) from @ssjones and I love the way it smokes. Any chance you know how Upshall drilled their pipes?Charatan (pronounced chair-a-tan) pipes are beautifully made, with a wide open draft, 4mm on the straights and 4.7 on the bents, according to Ken Barnes. They often exhibit beautiful graining, unique models and inventive freehands. As a person interested in the history of Britwood I find it curious that there is no really detailed information on them, at least in English. What gives?
Not offhand, but since Upshall was founded by Charatan veterans and followed many Charatan practices, drilling open like that wouldn't surprise me.I recently bought a Tilshead (Upshall second) from @ssjones and I love the way it smokes. Any chance you know how Upshall drilled their pipes?
Great looking piece! I'm happy you had a good experience with Marty, he's a solid pipe guy from way backWell, I just checked off another thing on my "bucket list" and acquired my first Charatan pipe. I had posted that I really wanted to get one and a fine member of this forum, @Briarcutter contacted me and put me in contact with Marty Pulvers of "Pulvers' Prior Briar." Some of you probably know Marty as he has been in the pipe world for a while.
Marty was a pleasure to work with and I found this beautiful Executive in an apple shape. Comes in at over 6.5" so it is quite long but very well balanced and smokes like a dream. For my maiden voyage, I chose an English blend from the Country Squire, "Angry Cornishman" and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Some photos below show the beautiful grain. It does have the "MADE BY HAND" lettering in block and has the "L" in circle for "Lane" distribution but the stem does not have the "CP" logo. Most of you will know more than I about what that may tell.
I am so very pleased with it and how it smokes and feels and I am indebted to both Larry and Marty for their help in finding this.

Thanks Al.Marty is one of the remaining legends.
Great choice, classic Charatan, and I love the ones that don't have the DC stem.
