Hello All,Barling's would be among my favourite pipes,i have 3 of them, all smooth, all bent(4731-5119-4759)but the pipe i smoke most is a B.B.& SONS(smooth, bent "the londoner"),was my Grandads pipe and must be 60 year old not sure, well worn with only londoner print remaining, but the point i'm making is these apart from minor filling in the bowl are very reasonable on e-bay or whereever, they are a good way to get into pre and transitional Barling pipes reasonably priced and IMHO the best smoking pipe i own....i hope i'm not intruding in this interesting conversation you guys are having...Good Luck.

A nice "Post Family" era pipe, Barling 3194.The post family era numbers finally made sense to me the other night, very obvious really, a size number, followed by a two digit shape number, followed by a stem type code. The 1962 catalog lists 20 shapes, the interesting thing is the Lovat and the Liverpool appear to be the same stummel, but with different stems. From what I've seen, from hallmarked examples from the mid sixties, the 7 stem code indicated an army mount. Of course, it doesn't account for some pipes having both the four digit numbers and the old sizing marks, or the frequent use of the T.V.F. stamp. The stamping system makes sense especially from the labor cost perspective versus the multiple stampings on the family era pipes.
More generally pipers, the post family pipes from the '60's are excellent smokers, or at least the ones I have are.

Love my two little pre transition Barling's, a lovat and bullcap, both Guinea grains. Unfortunately, like Rasselass, I've yet to master the posting of pictures. Fabulous pipes there, Sable brush 52. I could look at them all day.

Now if anyone says that Sablebrush's unique Barling combo is not a fantastic hobby (see unrelated thread) they don't see the light!

4 Pre's. Nothing too fancy here (Wow, some of the pipes on here!), but maybe sable could offer some dating opinions/ advice. Probably just 50's early 60's briars but. The last one (apple) is a straight grain with really buffed nomenclature & I don't have a magnifying glass right now. :)

Hi BuckRoo,
Really nice pipes! Is there anything written on the underside of the stems? A patent number places the pipe in the period 1936-1950. "Barling Design" would be 1950's thru 1962. Four digit model numbers where the first digit is a "1" indicate English market. Two and three digit model numbers are "Nichols" numbers and were sold in the US.

Thanks for the kind words guys & the much appreciated dating tips (I'm saving them), but nothing to speak of on the stems, darn it.

A family-era Barling sandblast. I have some doubts about the originality of the stem. Any stampings on the stem have long worn away, and the lines of the stem-shank fit are not seamless. The airway at the button looks at least close to correct, and the funneling out of the airway begins nearly 1/2" ahead of the button. The shape of the stem approximates convex (on the shape of Barling stems see sablebrush52's drawings), but I am no expert on the intricacies of Barling stems.
The photos of the right side of the bowl seem to show the remnants of the flaws that led this pipe to the sandblaster.
