"I honestly don't know where this country is heading; we've replaced common sense with giving people with itinerant stupidity absolute authority over our lives."
Sort of a bored fascism?
"What if they find a pipe tamper on the kid, do they refuse the patient or call in the BATFE?"
Neither, kids getting the chair.

Wow, that's an awful story (been there with one daughter myself).

I'd go straight to a good attorney's office on Monday regarding the daughters injuries, get the drunk to pay for her college tuition.

Too bad about the tamper, if I read correctly, you threw it away (not taken by the guard). I've had to chuck a good Case pocketknife at an airport.

But, overall, a good outcome for the young lady.

Keep us posted.

Thanks again guys.

Al, the officer took the tamp and put it in the "weapons" receptical tube thing. I did ask for it back as we were leaving, in my best well mannered Southern boy way, asked the new officer on duty if he mighy retrieve it for me. He just stood there like a statue with no personality or emotion at all.

Eh, I will make me a new one. I need to make some more anyways. I usually will make something nice for myself with scrap gold, because if I turn it in to reclaim it, it hurts me come tax time. Better to just have it hanging around as something that I can use. I wouldn't chose to make a gold tamper out of pocket. But, if the gold is there, and its in the form of a tamp... well... I'll use it.
The boy's dad is getting a lawyer. Since the burden of the bill is on him anyway, we will juat back him in his fight against the drunk driver. Better than getting another lawyer in the mudpit.
So far, just getting caught up on sleep an hour at a time.

Sorry to hear about this Michael. The stupidity of it all really gets my goat. Glad to hear your daughter will be ok.
The last time I flew I forgot that I had a really nice pocket knife in my carry on bag. I had just sent my checked bag through the little conveyor belt door. Flying southwest. The lady at the ticket counter put it in a box, taped it up, put a label on it with my name and ticket info and sent it through the baggage thing. It was there waiting for me when I arrived with my other bags. No charge, as it should be. Never had a problem with Southwest.
Always thought it was funny that pilots who are also Air Marshals have to lock their guns in a special lock box in the cockpit. They have control of the airplane for goodness sake. Again stupidity. It's everywhere.

You didn't get the tamper back???? That's dirty pool. People arrive at the ER in a frazzled hurry with whatever they have in their pockets. To confiscate anything is wrong, without a plan to give it back. I got my pocket knife back in a labeled envelope. Worse, this tamper is not even a viable weapon, and worse, it was obviously ornamental and of some value. No one wants to make an enemy of their local hospitals, since you might need them in life or death situations. But this has at least the appearance of crooked. Who got the tamper? Why? How much other non-weapon gear do they purloin? I'd like to have a word with the hospital board and the state medical board. No, don't take the time for that -- but someone isn't doing their job reviewing security practices. Theft is theft.

Sorry to hear about your daughter. Best Wishes for a speedy recovery.
On the up side, you get to hold it over her that she owes you a replacement tamper. Might get a smile from her.

A speedy recovery to the lass! Young bones heal quick, but help her through the trauma of the crash, too. 'Hope her date is doing well.
I'd favor pursuing something against the hospital or guard. They'll assume your crisis gives them license.

I am just happy that your daughter is going to be ok. In the end, no matter how big of an F'ing douchebag that guard was, the tamp was just a thing and not even a speck compared to your daughter's safety.

I think pipe nails are the answer. I bet you couldn't give one of those to the security guard gift-wrapped.

Michael, as you said...some precious things are easily replaced, others not. The sun will rise tomorrow and those you love will start another day. Sorry that you had to go through this.

Glad your daughter is safe, and sorry to hear about everything else. America is riddled with corruption these days.

Just saw this. Sorry to hear about the accident. They can be traumatic, especially when injuries are involved. And all because some idiot woman decided to get behind the wheel after her margaritas! I'm pretty sure here in Texas that would definitely have been a DUI. Sounds like your daughter's going to be ok though, and that's a blessing. The loss of the tamper is just bull crap, in my opinion. It probably went into the guards pocket. I'll smoke a pipe in your honor and to your daughter's revovery tonight. And I'll raise my middle finger in a salute to the crappy security.

I'm with you 100% on that one, MSO. Not to diminish anything from the girl's injury at all, but on a matter of principle alone, I would be all up the back of that hospital. That thing was one of a kind, had gold, jewels--- what happens to that stuff? Is it destroyed? Who gets it?  Theft pure and simple. It could have been worth a hundred dollars for all that cop knew. People come in there in an emergency crisis with their child severely injured and they get victimized a /second/ time by the very people they are trusting with their child's life? Just because some jackass rent-a-cop or his agency cannot bother to distinguish between a legitimate risk and a totally BS one that never should have been an issue at all? No reason why they couldn't have just held it and given it back when Cosmic left. People go into courthouses with (legally owned) guns and they are held until they leave! If people do not take a stand against this nonsense when it occurs it will just go on and on and on.

So sorry to hear about your saga, Cosmic! And, like you, I'd thrown any tamper - or indeed pipe - away if that meant being with my injured daughter. I'm sure your daughter appreciates you being there for her (and I was also glad to hear of her schoolmates being there).
I wish her a fast and complete recovery, and that this idiot drunk driver gets sent away!

Cosmic, I am really glad that your daughter is doing fine, wishing a speedy recovery to her.
she passed the field sobriety test, but failed the blow test... the officer said that the field sobriety test made the other test inadmissible.
This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I'm glad that they don't do a field test in my country, just the blow test. If you are drunk, you are drunk and it's proved by a digital equipment. Then they take you to a hospital and they take the blood sample to double prove it.
What happened at the hospital is even worse. Of course it could have been prevented as some advised above, however it is totally understandable that you don't even bother to think about a tamper when your kid is the main subject. We will soon see a new member here trying to sell an amazing tamper that he has inherited from his father.

Rough night but thank god your daughter will be able to recover. Just a thought, any pawn shops near you? Might want to call around to see if someone took your tamper out of the "trash" and tried to make a quick buck.
