Will have a look for those - thanks guys! Have no idea what is in stock in a small town liquor store. I think the population is 4000, but there are 14 liquor stores. Does that say anything?

Buffalo Trace has a neat website...Black Grouse is good - have had that before way back in the bush. Some guy driving a horse/wagon team had a bottle under the seat. I was outriding. I don't remember the last few miles. Good thing I have a good horse LOL! Was tasty though...

Laphroaig 10 yr. is my standard go to whisky, when I need something special I pull out the Lagavulin 16 yr.. I probably drink 3 bottles of Laphroaig for every bottle of Lagavulin.

Laphroig Quarter Cask is my current weekly dram.

That and Glenlivet are my staple Single Malts! Once every few moons though, I get a craving for Tobermory 16yr old.

I enjoy Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12 and Balvinie Double wood. I also stock Glenmorangie in the house. I just tried Speyburn for a less expensive bottle and it is fine at its price point. For a serious evening I like McCallens cask strength. I could take that poured over vanilla ice cream as it smells so nice. For the Irish evenings I like Jameson 12, and the Bushmills Black or the 16 yr old. I've a bottle of Middletons sitting for some future occasion.
For some reviews check out Ralfy on you tube. He can assist with the pronunciation and give his opinion on hundreds of spirits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmvZQOpdRu0&list=PL4832AEE68A269983

When I visit my grandfather, I'll have a glass of Clan Macgregor with him. But since I started off with single malts, I spoiled myself, so I always keep a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 on hand. Right now I've been drinking a bottle of Glenfiddich 18, and really want to try the 15....and 21(might need more overtime for this one though)

My Soctch cabinet is currently sitting at around $2000.00 worth of various single malt scotches. I can honestly say that in my opinion Glenfiddich 12 year old is arguably the best single malt out their for the price. Of course if you like peat you will be disappointed. Lagavullen and Laphroie are probably the best out there for Isle scotch. However I would trade my entire cabinet of scotch for a couple of cases of Bushmills Black Bush.
I discovered Bushmills and it's been my preferred whiskey ever since, when I'm looking for a good smooth sipping whiskey. The Irish know how to do whiskey like no other

Mike you are exactly right the Irish know how to make whiskey. If you like Irish Whiskey and haven't tried Burbon do yourself a favor and give it a go. Made like Irish Whiskey from Ulster Scots settlers in the south they subsitute Corn for barley but the smoothness is not lost.

After drinking 99% of the single malts mentioned in this thread, and quite a few not mentioned, I always go back to my favorite - Johnny Walker Black. I know it's a blend and not as fashionable. After years of this, I still drink an occasional single malt. Usually because some friend has a new one that is sure to be the one to "show me the error of my ways and turn me into a single malt drinker." Here is the inescapable conclusion for me. I like what I like. When I like something else better, it will be my favorite.

I wish I could get Bruichladdich's Laddie Ten here. For some reason the local stores (northern California) stock only Bruichladdich Rocks (which sucks) and not any of the other Bruichladdich offerings. They said The Laddie 10 would be a special order, price was ridiculously high. More than 50% higher than I see it online.
I'm an Islay fanboy too. My favorites are Bunnahabhain 12, ardbeg 10, Lagavulin 16, and Laphroaig 10 in that order. Still haven't tried anything by Caol Ila or Bowmore.
A Speyside malt that is worthy of praise is Aberlour A'Bunadh. Amazing stuff.

What kind of flavor does peat impart in the scotch? As I said above, I tried my first scotch last night and am a noob.

Collecting single malt scotch is a weakness of mine as well. Laphroaig, The Aberlour, MaCallan, Isle of Jura, Auchentoshan, Glenmorangie, Edradour are a few labels I can see through the glass of my liquor cabinet without opening the doors (too lazy to get up and go across the room). The youngest Glenlivet is an inexpensive scotch in Canada and what I recommend to people who want to start drinking single malt without a huge outlay of cash. Now, I've tried a few Irish whiskeys many years ago and haven't since. Maybe I'll try a few again after the glowing reviews I'm reading.

Peat is sort of similar to latakia in that both impart a smoky, campfire like quality to the taste. Ardbeg is the most heavily peated scotch and if you ever get a chance to try some, you'll know peat.
My current favorites (in no particular order)
1. Balvenie 14 yr Caribbean Cask (honey, roasted vanilla, sugar cane, ultra smooth)

2. Laphroaig 10 yr (Smoky and sweet with a long finish, the best price to taste ratio among all scotches IMO)

3. Glenmorangie 12 yr Quinta Ruban port cask (sweet port cask finish, Highland finish, complex)
My ALL TIME favorite was a bottle of Glenlivet Archive (which at the time of this particular bottling, I think was a 21). It had probably a dozen extra years on it, too, but I don't know whether scotch really develops much more after it's bottled.

It's funny because although I am a Canadian, I am also an Irish citizen and (obviously) of Irish ancestry, and although I like Irish Whiskey, I don't like it nearly as much as a good Scotch. That said, if you are ever in Dublin I would recommend touring the Jameson's distillery. And If you ever go to Northern Island to County Antrim, a visit to Bushmills is not to be missed.
Don't get me wrong, I love Irish whiskey, but just not as much as a good scotch. I fear this post may cause me to lose my Irish passport.
Puffdaddy, we get hammered on taxes for booze up here. A bottle of Laddie 10 costs me bout Cdn$ 64 (about US$63). Still, I buy it by the case.
And for peat lovers, you should try Octomore. It costs a king's ransom, but is the most heavily peated scotch known to man.

So many whiskies, so little time. I'm a fan of any well made Scottish whisky be it blended or single malt. My taste in whisky is much like my taste in pipes and tobacco. Different whisky for different moods, times of year, time of day...etc... Currently have open: Ardbeg 10 year, Bruichladdich The Laddie Classic Edition_01, Auchentoshan 12 year, Old Pulteney 12 Year, and Glenmorangie Original 10 Year.
Glad to see someone posting Ralfy videos. That guy is a terrific whisky reviewer and one damn entertaining Scot. Watching Ralfy videos is another activity that goes good with pipe smoking. He even does a review on pipe smoking.

Love my Bowmore 17yrs which I cannot find anymore (discontinued). :crying:

So, for now I'm enjoying some Macallan 18yrs and Laphroaig 18yrs.
I also like my Cragganmore 12yrs. It reminds me of my college days in Montreal... Breaking our budget for a good scotch!!!

I am not a big drinker, but every so often. About 30 years ago I tried a 24 year old whisky - I think it was Ambassador. It was so good, I never forgot that single drink. With St Patty's day coming up, I've been thinking of trying a good Irish whisky and decided on a bottle of 21 year old Bushmills. Looking forward to receiving it next week. :puffy:
