I have no dog in this fight but I do love my 3” GP100 with compact grips!Interesting. I’ve just never really encountered many people who have cracked wood stocks on firearms unless they were an idiot or experienced a catastrophic failure due to poor design. I’m not a collector - I only have a collection of firearms that I use.
A truly fine firearm does not have to have English walnut.
This is a truly fine firearm - no wood.

I never worried about my briar... but meerschaum, that was always another story. When I lived in Missouri, the cold winters always worried me when I thought about going outside with a Meer that I had already been smoking inside.Back to topic- Briar is a wholly different material than Walnut, not to mention Mahoghany, Pine or Saw Grass.
Stasis is desired in good briar keeping, though reasonable variance will matter not a whit, as to temperature or humidity levels.
The Chinese sell a pipe made of wood and hard rubber for $9.99, all you want to buy. They may be communists in theory but they don’t operate at a loss.Ok, check out how much a ebauchon of briar costs, and also a rod of vulcanite. It's not just a few dollars.
I've also been a jeweler for almost 50 years. You are sort of right about watches, however, there are jewels set at each moving part of the watch. But sure, you always paying more than what the raw materials cost. When you buy a ring, you always are paying more than just what the gold and stone is valued at on wholesale level.
I just don't want someone new to come to your thread where you say all of these little things that are dead wrong, within your posts. Yes, pipemakers all whine and complain about the costs of briar and rods, and NO, they are not nearly as expensive as a piece of jeweler, or even most other sculpting materials. But, if you were to buy a hunk of briar and rod, it would definitely cost more than what Dr. Grabow sells their rinky dinky's for. So, just tossing offhand that they cost merely a few bucks is not doing pipes much justice... but I guess since you think these Briar Lees are so great, maybe the shit he used was just the cheapest in the world.
:::sigh::: now go ahead and give us your spiel on how Briar Lees cost a quarter back when a quarter was worth more than the finest Dunhill on the planet. Jeesh... ha ha.
Now, don't get me wrong. I do enjoy your ramblings. If I didn't, I wouldn't read them. I sort of enjoy proofing them for all of these little ignorances. So, just know that I appreciate your posts... enjoy them even.
So, instead of showing me prices of briar ebauchons or rods of vulcanite, you show me cheap pipes from China. You're using the prices of ebay Chinese pipes which could be made out of anything as your proof that briar is cheap. The Chinese sell a pipe made of wood and hard rubber for $9.99, all you want to buy. It stands out because of its excellent design and looks. The Erik Nording Pipe has a large fanbase. By the mid-1960s he began professionally carving hand-made pipes in Slangerup, Denmark. The dollar today is worth ten times less than when I was born in 1958.
But there’s no way under the sun a perfect Danish freehand sold for $10 in 1958, nor a perfect, flawless, Orient Bambino watch, either.
Orient automatic watches are a miracle on an order of magnitude greater than cheap new briar pipes.
My $100 Orient Bambino is more accurate, and it’s better, than my father’s 1958 Hamilton (which has a Swiss Made movement). Japan has some of the highest labor and regulatory costs on earth, and Orient makes the movement in Japan. How dey do dat?
Humans are smart critters.
Give us a profit motive and a large enough market and eventually we’ll make a $100 automatic mechanical wrist watch that keeps time like a marine chronometer for ten years abd then you throw it away and buy another one.
Opinions are cheap. Facts are cheaper. It wasn’t that long ago that we learned about “alternative facts”. To be clear, on a forum such at this, facts and entertainment compete for readership but it is clear that entertainment trumps why people come here. I have no idea what Peterson pays for their briar, but it is clearly less than it is for their pipes. And, a lot of their pipes aren’t that expensive. So, if lee wants to refer to it as being only a few dollars or you want to say it is much more, it really doesn’t matter so long as Peterson makes a profit and is able to absorb all the manufacturing and sales costs associated with selling the pipe. Who cares? The briar is cheaper than the pipe and there it is. What’s left? Entertainment for the masses. So, instead of showing me prices of briar ebauchons or rods of vulcanite, you show me cheap pipes from China. This is like trying to prove to me that dogfood is cheap by showing me adds for free puppies. Most likely, you looked up briar prices, realized that I was correct, then you looked up the prices of vulcanite rod stock and realized I was correct again, so to impress Telescope's keen sense of opinion verses facts, you came up with this backwards thinking solutions, ha ha. You are very amusing.
I get you and Briar Lee confused sometimes. Your point gets muddled in a bunch of other stuff, and I have to dig for it.Opinions are cheap. Facts are cheaper. Men are so vain, that some men will pay eight million dollars for a stainless steel watch, that really doesn't have any more stainless steel and ceramic than the $100 Orient Bambino on my wrist. So, instead of showing me prices of briar ebauchons or rods of vulcanite, you show me cheap pipes from China. In general, I am a poor forum writer. I try to limit my word usage (not easy) and I speak in a short hand that doesn't translate well over the internet - I leave out a lot of concepts. I forget that the conversation isn't in person and Much is lost in the translation. I am also a bit scattered in my thinking, such as replying about LOTR here - in order to agree with whatever point I wanted to agree and felt it overlapped with in terms of another conversation I was having.I get you and Briar Lee confused sometimes. I think I’ve made my point clear.
And, I enjoy your posts as well.
I too enjoy a good story. Now, if I didn’t comment, nor anyone said anything adverse to what Briar Lee is posting, would it be as good of a thread? He wouldn’t have come back with more stories, nor swayed his rhetoric to different subjects. In general, I am a poor forum writer. Honestly, I do enjoy facts. I prefer them, but I really prefer to have them told with a good story (who doesn't). Lee tells stories and some of what he says is spot on - that is - for someone living in the Ozarks such as my father. I guess I am so use to hanging with Hillbillies that I've grown accustomed to the story telling and pay little to no mind to the facts of the story. It's a life hazard when one has a genuine hillbilly for a pappy.
I hope you get gorged with money.Men are so vain, that some men will pay eight million dollars for a stainless steel watch, that really doesn't have any more stainless steel and ceramic than the $100 Orient Bambino on my wrist.
When Lee Mace, a wealthy and famous local country music show owner, about thirty years ago made the unfortunate decision to ride in a two seat experimental airplane a younger friend of his had put together, and the plane crashed into a boat dock and both occupants drowned, in Lee Mace's pocket was a $30,000 minute repeating pocket watch.
Somebody had the presence of mind to call a locally famous watchmaker who saved Lee Mace's watch from being ruined, by taking it all apart before the water caused any damage. I used that watchmaker to service all my good watches with balance wheels until he retired last year. Now, I do not know where I can get a good watch cleaned, oiled and serviced. I'm sure there are plenty of watchmakers on the internet I can use.
The rich are very different than you and me. They can afford better toys.
If you google "minute repeater" it may be that Lee Mace paid too much for his watch. Here's one that seems like it would be a good one, for less than $8,000.

My trouble would be if I ever settle a billion dollar personal injury case, and I'm so gorged with money that I'd not feel guilty buying a super high dollar brand new toy of any kind, whether it be a shotgun, pipe, watch, camera, pair of binoculars, and such other luxuries as those, is that the very top best of most luxury goods, are not much if any better than really nice examples of the same toy.
Not long ago I bought a brand new $100 Grade 1 Nording freehand. It is a thing of sheer beauty, and after i broke it in the pipe smokes very well. Nording could not have paid more than $25 for the briar and vulcanite used to make my pipe. He likely paid less than ten dollars. and has an efficient operation where he pays another few dollars in labor to make the pipes.
How much more, does Dunhill spend on materials to make this $1,200 pipe?

That top of the line Dunhill is a beautiful pipe, and I think worth the price asked, the problem is, I won't pay that much for my toys.

Rinsing my pipes is one thing, but washing my guns won't fly. I'm with you.I once had a Walker Colt black powder revolver gifted to me by an associate of the firm when we were based in NJ. I fired it once in the garden at Woodsroads house and then gave the thing to him as it was a totally impractical weapon!
