Ah.

This is where forums---conversation via written word only---goes in the ditch.

You are now (in a sense) defending what he said by presuming it was phrased in a way to side-step actual meaning while implying a different meaning.

While offering his upbringing / station in life / comportment as the underlying reason for having done it in such a stylized, indirect way.

The problem now is establishing how you can be sure of all that (mind reading? PM? telephone call? ) to offer it as anything more than a guess.

See how messy this gets? And how quickly?

Take it from an old guy: The adage "Say what you mean, and mean what you say" makes more sense with every passing day. It's not only more efficient (by far), but easier. (Not many things in life are both).

You'll piss people off from time to time for doing so, but at least everyone involved will understand WHY the pissed-off-edness came about, and not have to dissect, analyze, and make treacherous presumptions when trying to reverse engineer what was said vs. what was meant.

Sasquatch is a good example of someone who understands all this. Until he was 25 or so, all he could do was either smile or growl. He either pet humans gently on the head or ate them.

After a while both he and those around him became stressed by that, so he went to school and got an advanced degree in Serious Thoughtful Stuff.

Now everyone understands what he says and what he means... because they are the same thing.

My point? In the words of Mister Lee, "The desk was firm on the shaky floor. The couch cover and hall drapes were blue."
That's some serious "word salad" man...LOL!!

My Aunt Edith used to make the best word salads. Every Thanksgiving, we all knew who's salad dishes were going to run out first, so you'd better hurry. Just heap those words up onto the plate, because it may not be there when you come back for seconds.
She was also responsible for the word shortage of 1974, i mean, it wasn't as bad as the 20's, when they had run out of words so bad, people stood in line to get just a few letters of a word. Hell, words got so expensive that they couldn't even put words into their movies, just moving pictures, like MTV with the sound turned down. No color either, because Van Gogh had used all of the color up 60 years before. It took that long for the world's color supply to regrow back to normal. People just ran into each other at traffic lights.

But, we were grateful that we at least had light, no words, no color, just a buncha lights. We were afraid that the lights might go out, but my dad stood at the electric meter watching the lightning make the spinner things jump and increase speed... so we were safe.

Ahhh, Aunt Edith's word salads... takes me back to a time when things were more complicated. puffy

Hell, he has generated 122 post overt 7 pages, and most likely inspired a dozen or so new members to join.
I like his humor and poking finger approach to those who are full of themselves at times...LOL!!
I agree, some folks take themselves too seriously. I mean, this is pipes and tobacco, not foreign policy, NATO, or golf... you know... important things. puffy

If we get into a debate over a pipe, nothing bad is going to happen in the world. And. hell... a good debate over a pipe is good for the hobby.
