We had all kinds of Harnetts and Petos in part 1. It seems almost every American museum has a least one. I found this really strange one recently. It looks like it's signed by Harnett on the lower right. It's actually a Peto who signed very faintly in the upper left, which you may be able to see by adjusting the brightness on your monitor. This makes me believe the relationship may have been more than respect for an upperclassman with the same teacher and a few exchanges of pipes. They must have been very close for most of their lives. Since Peto outlived Harnett it could also be a tribute at his passing.

Sorry Edgreen, I didn't check part 1
I don't think there's anybody left here who checks part 1. It's nice to see all those Harnett's all at once it such great resolution. Harnett and Peto have just fascinated me since I discovered them while doing this. This wasn't a Harnett/Peto pipe period like Picasso's blue period. They painted the same basic objects for their entire lives and found a means of artistic expression doing so. That's why I think the Peto I posted may be an elegy. The position of the pipe, the one totally burnt match, the last of the ash right above Harnett's name and the top off the tobacco jar, like maybe it's empty.
