Bumping this thread with a look into the future:

This image is from "Raleigh's First Pipe in England" - an illustration included in Frederick William Fairholt's ''Tobacco, its history and associations'' (circa 1859). It depicts a scene from the 1600s when tobacco first arrived in Europe...


Sir Walter Raleigh is looking very relaxed while smoking tobacco he brought back from the New World. He writes in his journal: "Prithee, I dost not giveth any f'ckeths and thine tobacco is some good sh't".
True story.
