I've seen several other large paintings of his (Gdanietz) with the same man, in the same clothes, doing the same thing in different positions. Now I'm going to have to find out if they are all self portraits or some relative that he didn't have to pay to model for him or if it's just a kind of Rodrigue blue dog kind of thing.

Ok, that's a lot sadder than any of my theories. Because of the remoteness of this fishing village traditional dress and ways of life hadn't been touched by the modern world (turn of the last century). An enterprising landlord began promoting it as an artists' community and began renting out rooms and studios to a wide array of artists. He also rented out models and took some paintings in lieu of rent. The place and people changed the way and what that Wilhelm Gdanietz painted. My guess this is either one of the rented out models and/or the landlord himself and all of these paintings were just rent. If anyone knows anything else let us know. I'd be curious
