I can't thank all of you enough for this thread! I've been having nothing but trouble with the lighters I do have. I've had issues with the fuel from Zippos (or other lighter-fluid based lighters) getting into my tobacco, so I think they're not an option for me.
On the other hand, cheap "regular" lighters do cause problems with charring my briar, and the pipes cost more than the flame is worth.
A year or so ago, I bought a "goose-neck" lighter (from JR cigars or Thompson?). It was probably meant as some kind of candle lighter, but it works really well for me as a pipe lighter. Its pretty poorly made, I have trouble getting it to refill for more than a few lights, but it works really well for lighting a pipe when it has fuel inside. Its is no longer available (can't find it anywhere) so far as I know, but I'd suggest looking for other goose-neck style lighters. I've found a website that sells tons of different lighters, but I hesitate to post them here, as I've never used them, and can't vouch for them.
I also can't seem to find a cheap "side-kick" lighter anywhere (locally), but I'm not done looking yet.
Thanks all for your wisdom!
