Ogden's of Liverpool Gold Block

This was a very generous kind gift from klause - Ogden's is one of my favorite old baccy houses so it was great to be able to sample this - mild/med bright Va with a little burley, sweet and tasty, the topping survived the years and lent flavors of honey, maple, and vanilla...

...and now, for some ugly stuff.
This is what mummy dust looks like.
Flakes that crumble to the touch.
The sad, but somewhat funny, tale of the Bulwark Boondoggle here:

At least I got to open an old cutter-top, bittersweet as it was.
Too bad the tin didn't have a paper liner, it may have faired better...

I don't know what Midnight Lace tobacco tastes like but, for some reason, I really want some.

Found a very scarce unopened cutter-top made by an American maker,

you hardly ever see these so it was a cause for celebration.
It arrived today!

There was some cause for slight concern, the signs of rust and a non-puffy top, but I went ahead and bought it because one rarely sees 'em --- it seemed incredibly light when I first held it and had no shake whatsoever...
...I wanted to open it immediately, so off I went.
The puncture released that glorious vacuum hiss and excitement was shiverin' my timbers...
...but the glorious hiss was missing any glorious aroma which should be present,

continue twisting ( knife lid ecstasy I was in!) and then suddenly an odd sound of the lid plinking against metal WTF?!?!? Gosh begosh if the damn thing really was empty LOL that'd explain why it was light as a feather, duh.

Dammit!

Pitfalls of buying vintage tins abound and here's another one I fell right into! LOL

The damn thing turned out to be a "dummy tin" made solely for display - the British tins are usually marked or stamped as such, but this one looked like the real deal.
Glad I only paid a few bucks for it, otherwise I'd be pissed.
Was it fun to open?

Yes.

Yes it was;

until the plink of the lid that is, because with that sound my stomach plummeted too, all hope lost!

:(

This thread reminds me of Frank Zappa's quote "tobacco is my favorite vegetable." This beats any pictures I've seen in cookbooks, and I've seen a lot of pictures in cookbooks. My mouth waters every new entry here.

In the sticks in Mississippi
Wow! All I can say is wow!

Somehow I missed this post, and it's just great! Yeah I know it seems kind of strange to some people to love looking at pics of tobacco, but if you're smoking this stuff, it all makes sense.
So here's my meager contribution to the show. I bought a tin of SG Bothy Flake a few months ago when it was released, and I gotta say I love this stuff. Problem is, I haven't seen it for sale since then. So I don't know if it was a one time deal, or I'll ever see another tin of it again. Now I'm rationing myself on how much I smoke trying to make it last till it comes up for sale again.
It has nice thick flakes that are fairly moist, and the most wonderful tin note. Nice scotch flavoring that stays in the background. Fun to light up a bowl and read the Kearvaig Pipe Club newsletters online. Took a couple of pics before jarring it up.

Thanks for the adds!
Good stuff.
I love this thread.
That humongous Kendal Plug is eyeball popping!
The Bothy Flake insert is cool too,

that's one I need to try,

looks yummy.
