My guess on the black stuff is that it is self vulcanizing rubber tape. It doesn't have adhesive but sticks to itself and is removable. Used for weather sealing electrical connectors.

Michael just sent me another update of the pipe staining in progress - I am excited to see the mammoth shank treatment on the pipes:

Those look amazing. I like his new blasting technique, it is like a cross between a blast and a rustication where the pipe is incredibly craggy. You can still see the ring grain but it has a cool carved look as well. That must be pretty time consuming.

Harris, I am happy so far. Of course, I want to see them live and in the flesh and also see how they smoke. Michael has invited me out to his shop to pick them up. i will have to check the schedule to see when I can make it out there.

Peck, those are spectacular. Thanks for sharing the pics with us -- it's been such fun to see these pipes go from start to finish like this.
I hope you get a chance to go pick them up in person -- how cool would that be?

Wonderful pipes, Peck. Congratulations. It's lovely to see this commission coming to fruition. Have you been out to Michael's studio yet? If not, in my opinion, it's worth the drive. Michael loves to smoke a bowl and chat pipes, and has a comfortable shop to do it in.
I look forward to hearing how these smoke.

If you're heading out this way to pick them up perhaps we can have an impromptu Smokestacks get together to help you celebrate the new pipes.

Good idea Brian. Right now we are shooting for the 25th, but there is some issue with the tempered glass on the pipe cabinet so we may have to push that. I want to get everything at once.

Michael just sent me an updated shot of the pipe cabinet. The cabinet does have vents on each side of the door.
Interestingly, the light coloured handles on the drawers and on the cabinet are "Holly" - no idea what that wood is since I associate it with Christmas, lol.

Roth, it holds 24. I also have the Ken Lamb cabinets shows earlier in the thread - each of the doored cabinets also hold 24 and the large tiered rack holds 48. So I am at 120 racked.
For pipes not currently in rotation I have a bunch of those Brigham stackers - they hold most of the rest of the pipes that I own save for a couple of really large ones (Ardor giants) which I don't really smoke.

I was going to go grab the cabinet and the pipes from Michael at his shop tomorrow afternoon. But work calls and I have to fly to Montreal in the morning. We have rescheduled until next week.
