Michael Parks is working on a few things for me at the moment. One is a two pipe set, with a larger sized billiard and a Canadian in a presentation box. At the same time, he is also working on a long thin shanked poker (some of you will know about my thin-shank fetish from other posts). All pipes will be blasted, The other thing we have going is a cabinet pipe rack which he designed and one of his colleagues is building. Recently he sent me some update shots. Truth be told, I know zilch about making pipes, so the first photograph is one I find quite intriguing. I guess I just never realized that pipemakers sketch out the pipe on briar before constructing it. In any event, thought I would share the pics.

Outstanding.
Thanks for sharing the designs and work in progress Peck. Greatly appreciated.
Can't wait to see how your pipes evolve/turn-out.

Very exciting.
I tried to blow up the picture to see the notes he had on the briar, but couldn't read it.
How many pipes will the rack hold?
Keep us posted on the progress.

Roth, here is what I know of the pipe cabinet:
Specs:

-24-pipe cabinet, sized for large pipes

-Solid ribbon mahogany, w/ fiddleback maple handle, back panel of curly or BE maple

-French doors, rabbeted, glazed, w/ venting

-Patinated solid brass hinges

-Magnetic closures

-Hand-rubbed oil finish

- two dovetailed drawers with shop-built handles to match door handle.

-w/ french cleat for wall mounting
The drawings are below, but these don't reflect the drawers which I added later

The cabinet will probably look very similar to the cabinets Ken Lamb made for me in the fall, though those were walnut with birdseye maple.

Looks pretty cool. You want to make sure that you have holes in the sides of the rack to let it breath. I have 3 on each side of my Savinelli 36 count rack.

I was thinking about that Harris. The specs do say "French doors, rabbeted, glazed, w/ venting"
Not sure where the venting will be

Not having had a pipe collection for long, nor one large enough to merit a cabinet, I haven't tried this but... I wonder if placing a small container of baking soda, activated carbon/charcoal, or coffee grinds (my favourite) absorb the off odours. Not to say that venting isn't important, we all know that air circulation is good for pipes resting. Just that it might be more pleasant to have the odours leached, absorbed and removed versus masked.
Anyone ever try anything like this?

Beautiful cabinets, Peck. Very interested in watching the pipes develop - please keep posting their progress.
Pruss, those are great ideas for absorbing odors - I know the coffee trick. When we would shut up the house in Hawaii (long sold, sigh) we would put coffee in the refrigerator with the door cracked open.

roth, as long as you spray once in a while with Ozium, the room will not smell. Gretta and Zack were over Saturday night and Gretta could not believe my house did not smell like tobacco since I smoke inside all the time.
peck, that square pipe is cool. hehehe

Harris, you're so right about the Ozium...however, we definitely took care of the lack of tobacco smell after we fired up three pipes in the house...good times!
