I bought this from a pipe shop sometime in the last decade of the previous millennia. So about 30 years old.
At first opening, my nose was hit with a strong sweetish/tangy aroma, something like apricot liquor.
After an hour of airing it out on a paper plate, the topping smell has burned off considerably and I can now smell the natural tobacco flavors.
I'll leave it out to dry out overnight before smoking a bowl.

Esoterica Dunbar from 2010. Could benefit of some more aging...

The appropriate color of the tobacco is best represented by the second pic. The white sheet of paper used in the bottom pic darkened considerably the tobacco color tones.
This was the first esoterica blend, and perique blend I ever tried. It smelled so fermented that I thought it had soured in some way. Had to take a sample to my local tobacconist and get his opinion. It made.me.fall in love w VA perique blends

Be very interested in your thoughts on this as I have a generous quantity cellared but nothing of this age.

Be very interested in your thoughts on this as I have a generous quantity cellared but nothing of this age.
I have only smoked two bowls thus far, so I hesitate to give a firm opinion. And you should be aware my palate is not particularly discerning. Usually, I smoke Latakia blends.
Also, I have never tried this blend un-aged, so I cannot make any comparison in this regard. Visually, many sugar crystals are apparent.

I have dried and rubbed it thoroughly, as is my habit.
My *initial* impression of this tin of well-aged Mac Baren Scottish Mixture is:
mild, pleasant, burns well to dry ash.
No one flavor stands out--not the Burley, Virginia, or Kentucky.
This is often the effect of aging; marrying of flavors.
The topping is not noticeable in the smoke, which is fine by me.

An inoffensive all-day smoke, as they say. Nothing to complain about and nothing to rave about.
I will post here if future smokes modify this first impression.

I have smoked a couple of tins fresh 1-2 years ago, and my impression would have been the same.

Each smoke seemed to provide something a little different, varying gently and seemingly influenced by what I'd eaten or drank or simply whatever was different in the environment from day to day. I believe there are over 40 different leaf varietals within the blend...

While it wasn't a classic "favorite"; due to the variability, I ordered several for the cellar because I felt it had that flexibility to provide a pleasant experience in the future whenever I wished to return to it.

I tired of it after a couple tins sequentially, but I'm pleased to have some for random points in the future.

Popped a couple to-try blends from a TAD run today.

Since i'm a fan of Cobblestone's Hiking, i figured i'd try the Burley Plug this round. Good stuff!

And since i enjoy Former's Straight Grain Flake (and just grabbed a couple more tins of that), i figured i might as well try the Cross Grain as well, since it was readily available. I've already got a bowl of this loaded up. Unfortunately, i only smoke one pipe at a time, so it's next! :)

Just opened these to breath for a couple of weeks before smoking. Been doing that for awhile, I like the results.

Interesting. Do you keep the lid on the tin, or keep the tobacco open to the air? I usually open a tin and leave it covered for a few days before jarring it but I might leave it longer like you do
