Congrats! Sound like a great job, and a great reason if ever to have a slow down in pipe smoking. Still really enjoying the prospect of seeing this pipe make it a year!

Good deal! I have some cobs that I bought in 2009 and they’re still going strong, they are almost as dark as morta now but that just gives em character!
Congrats on the job! It’s a shame you can’t smoke and conduct at the same time like in the good ol days! You know those train conductors had a cob hanging out of their mouth the whole way... at least that’s how I imagine it.

Yes I'm excited for this cob to start changing. I repaired my other Legend twice with wood putty. I think if I take care of the cake on this one, it won't crack so quickly.

Guess I can't really comment as I have no ammo. I do have several Cobs; 1 of em for 14 yrs but... Hmmmmm, even though it's MM, I wouldn't wanna try it for a year. Rootin fer ya mate.

None of my pipes have ever tasted either of those blends. And unless samples are sent my way, will continue to never taste those blends. Lol

Sorry for the late updates. Been trying to smoke as much as I can lately, but it's still not even close to when I started.
I'm still having fun with the experiment, but I'm starting to miss my briars. But I must stay strong!
Trying to finish the last of the Carter Hall in my pouch, because it's been dried up for a couple weeks now. I keep adding to it, to try to keep it moist, but it's not helping. I'll finish the last of this, and open a fresh pouch.
184 bowls in 3 months.

I have strong emotions both ways regarding changing the stem. It is the cob and how it handles the abuse that I'm most concerned with. So, change the bit, if you must. After all your comfort is important.
I suppose.

Great to see an update on this. I say change the stem if you feel you must. It's not the stem that we're trying to judge in my opinion, but the cob itself. If the experiment were being done by a non clencher, the stem wouldn't be a factor anyway.

The stem isn't original to the cob. It's a "almost" new amber replacement stem I had on standby. So from what I gathered, it was supposed to be a little bit stronger than the regular original.
We can always take votes.

Keep going with same stem. If it develops a hole that’s ok. I smoke many a pipe with a stem hole . . Hats off to the adventure . That’s my vote .

I will try to get that tamper finished and include a stem and maybe some rare tobacco in the package.
Keep at the schooling!

I vote for changing the stem; however, only when it has been ridden to the end of it true life. If it were me, and of course it is not me as I do not have the patients to attempt this, I would keep a separate tally for each stem; thus allowing us to get a good idea of how long these cheap pieces will last. Finally, please do not throw away the stems. I would love to see a picture at the end of the year with the cob and all of the necessary, ie. 3 or 4, stems you used.
Keep puffing Didi. Your research is invaluable to the noble cause of pipe smoking. :)
