Starting to Get Obsessed

First off, I am a new pipe smoker and anything I say about it is from the perspective of an inexperienced newb. I enjoyed the original post in this thread even if I disagree with a couple of points. I can't deny that it started an interesting and lively thread. I call that a win.
I recently sat in my roof garden with four other pipe smokers who represented at least three different reasons for their commitment to the pipe. I love the many different blends and tastes and the fact that it has allowed me to quit the (%($&^ cigs. One of the boys is a serious collector, (something I will probably never be), the other is a real "chap", a would be time traveler, who dreams of being a Victorian or Edwardian era gentleman. He is huge on image and while I do not share his obsession I love watching him and his "affectations". Another is a small Asian fellow with a passion for huge pipes. I think he looks silly but the pleasure he takes in his giants is infectious. I've learned something from each of them.
Some refer to pipe smoking as a "hobby" an idea that never would have occurred to me, being a nic addict with a passion for the taste of tobacco in its many varieties. It's all good. To me, the only dumb question is an insincere question in which the answer doesn't matter.
A great thread, thanks to Big Van.

I will do my best to help you without being a smart ass!!
I have never taken your comments as being a smart ass, In fact , I can tell that you are just "picken", I have learned quite a bit on different aspects of pipes and how to smoke them just by reading your answers to the questions that are asked. :puffy:

Bob, You are a good Man.
I just reached a whole new level of respect for this fine gentleman. but shit Bob, next time you post up a couple of pipes for sale, I'm just gonna go ahead and try to piss you off and wait for my free pipes to show up.
This has turned out to be an excellent thread after all. I admire all the participants for their candid opinions, and hope they keep throwing things out for discussion for all of us to learn from.

Thank you baskerville, you didn't offend me. I didn't even know it was a woman's actually until my dad saw it buttoned on the left side. And I know I have a hard time admitting I'm wrong, I always have, I get it from my mother. And PM sent.

Well, my pathetic girlie brain is really confused now, and I'm not even blonde ... on the one hand we have post #4 on page 1 ...
Ace57 says:
Bigvan, Very well said, hats off to You.
Now, a few posts above, when dear Baskerville has the testicular fortitude to man up and apologise, AND, states he'll not get frustrated with newbies asking questions again, and invites them to ask away, which is quite the opposite to how the OP made us newbies feel as clearly illustrated herein, we have ...
Ace57 says:
Bob, You are a good Man.
Now, to my small befuddled mind, those 2 posters are worlds apart in their outlook/attitude and I'm a wonderin' which outlook it is that you actually deem to be the correct one.

So I would like to give You a big THANK YOU for starting it and thank Kevin and the Mods for not shutting it down. It opened alot of eyes I think. Now I for one vote to close it I think it's time. :puffy:

Hahaha and now, surprise, surprise, wants it closed! Why? There may be more rookies out there working up the courage to say their magnificent, enlightening piece ... not likely there'll be any more stuffed shirts coming out in support of the OP though.

LMFAO, now that's funny, even if I can't relate to it suffice it to say we gals get more than our fair share of disappointments too & it ain't related to shirts!

Yes Basker it is, and I am applauding your attitude loudly because that was a magnificent gesture and a beautiful post :) Mwaaah!
Edited to add - it's late, I'm tired and more befuddled than I thought - the post you asked me if it was directed at you, was actually a question directed to Ace after his comment referring to your post - which was seemingly a turnaround to the comment made in post #4 - so whilst it was directed to Ace, it was actually your post I was referring to - does that make sense? If not, it'll be too late for me to edit by the time I wake up lol. I'm sure you'll figure out what I was trying to say which was "Kudos to Basker" and "Ace you got me damn confused", which he has now clarified beautifully.

Wow, I was gone for a couple days and I come back last night to this...shame I missed the heat of the discussion. But never-the-less. I'll add my 2 cents. Being new, this place has been great in aiding me to be a better smoker and enjoy my pipe a lot more. As I first stated when I came on here, I was going to have many questions because when I find something I like, I pick it apart to know EVERY little detail I can. However I have kept most of my questions to a minimum simply because I like everyone here and I don't want to annoy anybody. But that doesn't mean I don't still have the questions, and I usually ask those question more to get other peoples OPINIONS on the subject matter than to read a strick set of rules on some website that I can't.....pick apart(see the central theme).
When it comes to image...to each his own, I don't do anything to impress anyone else. Nuff said.
That being said, I would like to thank every single person on this site. Those I agree with, and those I disagree with. Because without either side, I would never learn. And learing is what life is all about.
Soooo.......You take the good, you take the bad, you mix them both and there you have....my closing statement.(if anyone can tell me where I ripped that off of, only adjusted to fit my post....well, I guess all I can give you is a kudos)

Again, it was never my intent to stifle questions, but rather to encourage the rookies not to sweat the small stuff. Some people got my point, others didn't. But by all means, keep asking questions.
Almagam, you held me accountable for my previous comments about Dr. Grabows. Bravo. Which is EXACTLY why I took my own advice and bought a brand new Grand Duke and am currently putting it through its paces. As for the rest of your post I wouldn't dream of arguing with cold, hard logic like that. It's practically Aristotelian.
Aussielass you seem to have taken the most offense. Please believe that it was not my intent. I was using examples from memory and couldn't have, for the life of me, remembered who said what. Had I known it would prove to be such a sensitive topic for you I would have used another example. However, I do stand by my statement (and there are those who agree with me) that it sometimes SEEMS as though some are placing more of an emphasis on the IMAGE rather than ACT of pipe smoking, and I think that's unfortunate. I would hate to see the pipe construed as "fashion".
A quick word about Ace... he and I have disagreed in the past (what do you expect? He's a Marine, I'm a Sailor) but we were able to find mutually agreeable middle ground. He may have liked what I wrote, yet still not agree with everything. I get it.
And for the most part it seems like almost everyone agreed with some of the things I stated and disagreed with others, but were all able to discuss rationally and cordially. To which I say: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

I like when the place gets shook up and knocks the dust off. It gets your attention and you see some things appear more as they really are (uncovered beauty or uncovered ugliness).
