Teams win titles not players. Look at Hull in St. Louis or Gretzky in L.A. Great players that never won a Cup in those cities because of the teams. If you're going by Cup wins then Shawn Thornton is better than Sid because he got one with the Ducks in '07 and one with the Bruins in '11 and Sid's only won one Cup. See my point.
Ovie beat out Sid for rookie of the year honors. He put up 52 goals and 106 points that year on one of the worst Caps teams ever. He achieved a record setting third Richard trophy this year and is also the only player to win four awards in one season when he snatched up the Richard, Art Ross, Hart, and Lindsey. Sid hasn't had a 50 goal season on a crap team. He didn't win a Calder. He hasn't won four awards in one year or three Richards. He's only won one Hart trophy to Ovie's two. He wasn't even a factor in Game 7 of '09 because he sat on the bench for half the game.
Individually speaking Sid is nowhere near being the best player in the game. There's a lot of players I'd choose over Sid when picking a team. Kane is a much better player than Sid. Easily the best passer and set up man in the game plus he can bury the biscuit when needed, note the Cup clinching Game 6 OT winner in 2010. You don't even have to leave the Hawks to find another player better than Sid. Toews is a much better leader and clutch player. He's deadly on the PK or PP and the youngest to captain a Cup team. Then there's Stamkos down in Tampa or Bergeron in Boston, or (can't believe I'm saying this as I hate the Wings) Datsyuk in Detroit. Sid's a top level player but definitely not the best in the league.
