It sorta pisses me off a bit, its not a health thing, its a money thing, and now they have it from vaping, so they can rush the smokes thing more.

If it was a health thing they'd say, "end of the year no more baccy into the country at all, period."

But instead they say, "Lets put prices up to discourage people even though the most impoverished are the most affected as they've bugger all else to look forward too other than a smoke"

Tobacco is the merest dust mite. The most trivial of beginnings.

Check out New Zealand's latest governmental push.

In a nutshell, it is:

"Please report anyone who upsets or concerns you for any of the following reasons, or simply because you think they might cause a future problem that could potentially involve violence."

They are actively encouraging citizens to spy on each other.

Meaning officially, as a campaign with fanfare and brochures and so forth.

I remember reading that and being particularly concerned.
However, they have to been seen to do something in response to the terrorist attacks in Christchurch.

The wording could be much much better, the whole "They might be a dangerous person please report them" is very 1984 like, and not the world I want to live in.

Unfortunately, New Zealand is catching up to the rest of the world for all the negatives, where everyone and everything is potentially dangerous, so we need more control to make sure it won't get worse, etc etc.

Hearing my parents and grandparents speak about NZ in the 60s/70s/80s/90s sounded lovely except for dentistry, lack of access to information and maybe one or two other items.

Obviously very subjective.

Indeed.

No large group of accomplished, professional adults can be THAT naive or collectively blind to how humans behave when given anonymous power over their neighbors.

Meaning it's deliberate. Just a wolf put into a pretty dress for public consumption and plausible deniability in the near term.

A few years from now, when the pretty dress falls away and people start to complain, they will be potential terrorists by definition.

That's a bit of societal ju-jitsu, right there...

I'm truly glad I'm gettin' old. This sort of thing is starting in many countries around the world, and where it will lead there is zero doubt.

And really it's worse than that...it apparently goes so far as to include language such as:

“So it could be the COVID measures that the Government took, or it could be other policies that are interpreted as infringing on rights.."

And what's worse is that about half of the population of the western world continues to enthusiastically support this stuff...and another 10 to 20% are just apathetic about it.

I feel sorry for children...what they're going to inherit if this course continues.

Just in case anyone needs another example of how batshit crazy some of this stuff is getting:

Norway Actress Tonje Gjevjon Could Face 3 Years in Prison for Saying ‘Men Cannot Be Lesbians’

And now you have the case in the UK where a woman was charged with "praying silently" near an abortion clinic... talk about thought police...

Soon they will say parents that don’t agree with pornographic material provided to, and sexualizing of elementary school children are domestic terrorist, you know like they do in America now …..
