New Zealand and Australia are running this experiment, in terms of health effects, so I suppose sooner or later that health statistics will tell. Cigarettes have been refined to almost exclusively a nicotine delivery system, so people get hooked on that and whatever else comes with it, often to excess.

If respiratory illnesses and cancers in particular are greatly reduced in this process, it will be a loud belated seconding of the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Smoking.

How does this relate to a more moderate use of tobacco? That remains to be seen. Seems as with alcohol, tobacco is good, or innocuous, to a point, and then it isn't. Different people have different susceptibilities.

As far as I can tell the legislation only raises the age of being able to legally purchase tobacco in NZ. It doesn’t have any impact on the legal smoking age, nor does it currently address importing tobacco.

It really changes nothing for future pipe smokers, as if anyone here is genuinely interested in pipes, beyond buying one tin to smoke in their LoTR inspired churchwarden, they were gonna have to grow their own anyways.

That's just the sales pitch.

Virtually anything can be shown to be injurious and/or shorten lifespan if you want to "prove" it with statistics... never mind the Too Much of a Good Thing aspect of EVERY activity or consumable.

Make no mistake. This sort of shit is intended---designed---from the ground up to create both acceptance and expectation in the mind of the public that a Group of Wise and Beneficent People should be in control of the lives of common citizens at every level.

Start with low hanging fruit like Evil Tobacco to codify the process and obtain legal pretext, then move on to Other Bad Things. The screw will NEVER stop being tightened.

The fun bit: Once a society becomes cashless and daily life is impossible without creating endless digital records, resisting the Group of Wise and Beneficent People will also be impossible. Everything they need to destroy a citizen who refuses to "get with the program" will be at their fingertips.

Are we talking pipe tobacco or a gorgeous NZ female? Choose your answer carefully if you have any hopes of me moving this to my "Must Visit List".
The only thing I fear more than terminator, is the wrath of mrs. Hoosier.

And all of that would be bad enough if there really was a Group of Wise and Beneficent People behind it all...but in reality, it is a Group of Psychopathic and Eugenicist Con-Artists.

Indeed.

If H. sapiens possessed an innate ability to detect and eliminate Dark Triad individuals as they appeared in the population, life on Earth since day one would have been orders of magnitude better in every measurable way and we'd be vastly more advanced now.

Since we’re all on a health kick let’s ban the dangerous substance Dihydrogen Oxide.

Worldwide it accounts for roughly 230,000 deaths per year.

Literally true. That stuff WILL KILL YOU. 😲

BAN IT!!!

(Watch a few of those sidewalk interview sessions where random people are asked generic questions about commonly encountered subjects/situations/materials/etc. Equal parts hysterical and terrifying.)

I gotta say, I’m genuinely curious to see whether being told you cannot purchase tobacco actually fuels a renewed interest in smoking. Probably not given the cost, and the overwhelming ease of access to vaping stuff
