Greetings to all. I am new to the forum as well as pipe smoking. I picked up my first pipe in August of 2014 and haven’t looked back. Pipes have always been a thing I admired from afar and wished I could be a part of. I came from a chain smoking household that made me have huge appreciations and respect towards smokers but not much love for the negatives that cigarette smoking brings with it.

I’m a Dennis Prager listener and he is a radio personality that smokes both pipe and cigars. He took a call from a young man who thanked him for turning him on to pipe smoking and went on to say how it positively impacted his life. I have listened to Prager talk about pipes for 10 years and always thought in the back of my mind ‘maybe someday’. This call put me over the edge.

I am enlisted in the United States Air Force and have brought the pipe back to the smoke pit. Young people like me (33) are pleasantly intrigued and have a ton of questions. I try to answer them the best that I can but I am no authority. Slowly I am converting the shop.

Hello All, I've been registered with the site for a couple days but just now noticed the intro thread so I thought I would formally introduce myself. I'm Hubert from Mississippi, or Mr. Holmes as I am going by on here. I'm pretty new to pipe smoking and have been enjoying it very much. Still learning the terminology and such so I may be speaking in odd terms for a while. Looking forward to meeting everyone and being a part of the community here. So far everyone has been very helpful and welcoming and patient and that speaks volumes of the sophistication here. Looking forward to many great years ahead on this site.
Happy Piping

Greetings forum. I am a new member and I've posted a couple of times now but never formally introduced myself.
Call me Pete. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation.
Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off- then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.
And that my friends is the beginning of my favorite book Moby Dick (with the exception of the substitution of my name for Ishmael). I have had a life on the seas since age three. Thankfully, For the last fifteen or so I have been my own captain and crew in the sun and warmth of the Florida Keys.
Novice pipe smoker. Everything I have learned has come from this forum. So glad I found you guys, everyday I look forward to learning something new.
Thanks-
Pete

Hello there. I am a new member from Birmingham UK. Originally I am from Madrid, Spain, but I have been living in the UK for 9 years now. My favourite book is Ludwig von Mises' Human Action, but I do read fiction as well. I haven't got a huge collection of pipes, but I have enough of them to get by. I particularly enjoy most of the Latakia based blends and mixtures and I have 3 staples that a rotate on a daily basis (Royal Yacht, Elizabethan Mixture and Night Cap), but I'll try almost anything that falls into my hands in the English non-cased tobacco range (VaPers, Balkans, Virginians, etc.): I don't do aromatics or cavendishes. I am 46 years old of age and I started smoking when I was in my early 20s. Back in those days I used to smoke Borkum Riff bourbon whiskey, but then I moved on to Balkan Sobranie. I'd like to mention I am a founding member of the Madrid Pipe club, which I created with a couple of friends when I was still studying at University (MPhil). I live in an old Victorian Mid-terraced house in the Hockley area and I am fellow member of the Birmingham Pipe/Cigar Club.

Hello from the Rocky Mountains, specifically Central Wyoming.
Grew up around pipe smokers, but they are all passed on now. Used to smoke cigars but quit tobacco products completely before I had moved on to pipes. Last few years found me contemplating pipes more and more until Black Friday had me browsing a few of the online pipe stores and I could resist.
Looking forward to learning more here than I already have just lurking.

Hello all, New guy from texas. I use to smoke a pipe years ago in college. I had a Physics Professor in College who smoked a pipe. The other Physics Professor smoked cigars. I remember the smell as you walked down the hall towards their offices. I had a pipe 10 or so years ago, I'll have to dig it out. Or get more. This seems like a quality site for information on pipes and tobacco. Let the adventure begin.

Hello forum members,
I am a relatively new member from Germany.

My earliest memory about pipe-smoking is a positive one - when I was at a Catholic kindergarten there was a (originally French) Catholic priest that the Church exempted him from restriction from tobacco because of his contribution and hardship endured during the Vietnam war. Whenever this priest appeared, all the kids could tell by their noses first as he had a vanilla flavor 'aura' around him.
I was never a cigarette smoker at all because I found cigarette a bit disgusting a certain point, but finally, I started pipe-smoking in 2001 after a multi-month trans-continental trip in which a female postdoc in Istanbul introduced me to pipe smoking. From that time on, I am still fairly new to pipe-smoking - I have tried only about 30 blends of tobacco and owned only about 10 pipes a few of which I will never use again. I keep pipe-smoking strictly as a hobby, that is I do it when I have time and when I am not too tired. My smoking technique is still mediocre, I cannot do those burn for over 1 and a half hour with re-lighting stunt at all.
Taste-wise, I experienced a transition of tobacco preference from aromatic to English and straight Virginia. This is probably because I could rather find nice aromatic blend in the early days and all those aromatic that I found disappointed me after the first few minutes of smoking. I think I am more and more into different kinds of English mixtures, but for cut - I am really into flakes, especially the real flakes (in coin-shape cuts, or in flat pieces), not rubbed nor loose.
Now I live in Germany, and before that I lived in the US for 5 years. So there are a lot of nice tobacco available in the US is not possible to acquire here in Germany, e.g. none of the GL Pease, Cornell & Diehl and McClelland are available here in Germany for purchase, nor it will become legal to buy them here in Germany. I haven't tried mail ordering but from within EU, it may be possible to mail order these brands from Denmark or Switzerland. I definitely miss my favorite tobaccos that I no longer can buy, e.g. McClelland Blackwoods flake.
I have been reading the forum posts and I am looking forward to learning more from all of you.

Hello everyone!
I've been lurking here for a couple months now and have finally got around to uploading an avatar and introducing myself. I had moved away from my pipe smoking for a few years, but have gotten back into it again. It's great having resources like pipesmagazine.com online. Without it, I'd feel like a solitary loner smoking my pipe. Between the pipe club that I've joined and online communities, I don't feel like the last pipe smoker left in the world.
I live in southwestern Michigan. I am lucky to have a B&M store with a decent pipe section 20 minutes from home. A little under an hour and a half away is the legendary Paul's Pipe Shop in Flint, MI (www.paulspipeshop.com). Paul's is the home of the Arrowhead Pipe Club which I am a member of. I'm also a member of NASPC.
The pipe collection currently stands at 19. My wife used to think that I had a large number of pipes until I pointed out to her the collection sizes that I've seen people talk about online or in The Pipe Collector.
Tobacco-wise, I love to explore. I like mild aromatics and mild English/Balkan, but my favorites are Virginias; especially Virginia/Periques. My current top 3 favorite tobaccos (in order) are Arrowhead Pipe Club Mixture (a Paul's Pipe Shop store blend), Davidoff Flake Medallions, and Orlik Golden Sliced.

Hi everyone, my name is Robert. I have been lurking for about 6 months, so I feel like I sort of know some of you as I have been reading your posts for a while. I am a newish pipe smoker, tried many years ago as a young man and basically just burned my mouth LOL!! Started again a touch under a year ago. This time I have been avidly reading and using tips picked up in this and other forums and discovered I can smoke a pipe without pain and the flavor WOW! I have no older pipe smokers to learn from, so using all of you fine people as my mentors! Just want to introduce myself very briefly and looking forward to participating in this forum.

J Paul here...
I am new to pipe smoking having been at it for less than a month. I ordered smaller pipes from Missouri Meerschaum because I didn't know if I would take to the tobacco taste in my mouth. I ordered the Mizzou Cob, and the Ozark Bent Cherry Hardwood. Each pipe has a bowl measuring 5/8 by 3/4 inches. rather small bowls... Just the right size for about 15 - 20 minutes smoking time.
A friend from J Dees Pipes in St. Louis, Missouri sent me some Tobacco Samples. The 1st one is Mississippi River, a wonderful non-aromatic blend of Cyprian Latakia, Louisiana Perique, and Virginia and a little something extra from Seattle Pipe Club's own blends... The other is called Anniversary from a Brick and Mortar store in St. Louis. It is an Aromatic and it tastes of Cognac and Chocolates, very delicious... I had also picked up some Cherry Captain Black. I quickly came to the realization that the Captain Black is purely inferior, and would serve as an emergency back up, LOL...
I have discovered the pure bliss of a pipe full of Mississippi River, and a Glass of Captain Morgan and Coca~Cola over ice...
