Hello, I left an introductory post on some other thread as I didn't know what I was doing, but I'll have another go. At 22 I'm a relatively young pipeman (pipekid?) and have only been at it for about a year, including a five-month hiatus. Studying in Dublin (pipe-smoking on a student budget in a country with Draconian tobacco taxes being difficult), native to Co. Cork, owner of all of four pipes and a handful of blends.

hi all, was drawn to this site by a discussion on porcelain pipes.
i'm 31, from the hills of eastern kentucky, but now make my permanent home in eastern slovakia. i've been an avid pipe-smoker for eleven years and i've probably lost more pipes than most people own. most of my collection are cheap oddities (hey, i can't resist the eccentric) but i have a few sturdy, quality warriors i keep in regular rotation (you can find those mentioned on my profile). lately my favorite, as i can't help but keep saying, is my thick, heavy clay that i've been smoking the dickens out of for two years now.
as for tobaccos, i mostly keep to whatever the one luxury tobacconist in the slovak city i call home has in stock. usually that means samuel gawith. my journey with tobacco is typical: from young, idealistic college student enamoured with aromatics and sickly sweet flavored drugstore abominations (borkum riff was a friend of mine) to grizzled haunter of old, dark, cheap pubs that tolerate eye-watering english blends high in latakia. my overall taste in tobacco? the closer to coal smoke the better, and an arm-numbing nicotine wallop is always welcome too.
glad to be among you good people.

Hello friends!

Kind of a funny story how I got into the pipe smoking business last week. I am currently sitting in the DEP program for the United States Air Force. Since I'll be leaving for basic training I decided to give my beard growing one last shot before the military makes me shave it. After about 2 months I had a pretty full beard. One random day my girlfriend sent me a picture of a bearded man smoking a pipe, it was captioned "running drops pounds, bearding drops panties". I laughed at the joke thought nothing more of it for the time being. A couple weeks later my girlfriend and I decided to make a bet on the broncos, cowboys game. She's a cowboys fan and I'm a broncos fan. She said if the broncos lost I'd have to shave my beard.... Well I couldn't decide what I wanted to bet so I thought back to the picture she sent me, and then bam! It hit me, I said if the broncos win, I want a tobacco pipe... Now all is said and done and I'm slowing working my way into the pipe smoking world.

Oh I'm sure I will! From the week I have now, I already enjoy it. I'm sure it'll only get better with the better quality pipes / tobacco I acquire

Greetings,
Like a lot of the new guys here, I've been smoking a pipe casually for many years suffering through my ignorance of just how enjoyable pipe smoking can be after a bit of investment and study. Over the past 35 years I've slowly worked my up from Captain Black and some Tinder Box blends. While I still enjoy a good aromatic, I've come to appreciate a few English blends. I've taken a liking to Squadron Leader recently and really look forward to learning what others enjoy.
One of the things that had been holding my development back is the cost of a good pipe. Fortunately I've recently discovered what treasures can be found on eBay and have taken advantage of some good buys there. I've also learned an appreciation for estate pipe restoration which I am currently studying and practicing.
Pipe smoking and collecting is really turning out to be a multi-faceted hobby and I'm looking forward to years of enjoyment and comradeship!

Hello,

My name is Andrew and I have recently became interested in pipe smoking. I'm in the Harrisburg, PA area and I've been a life long Pittsburg steelers and panthers fan.

Hey folks, newb from Columbus OH here! Been lurking for a few weeks and I've already learned a ton, this is a great forum.
Started seriously with cigars last Christmas as the result of a gift from my wife. As we all know, that is a spendy trail to ride, so I thought I'd pick up a pipe to make the whole schmear more budget-friendly. As we all ALSO know, this is a fascinating activity and I'm full-bore into piping now. :)
Like many, I have great memories of Grand-dad's Captain Black from a Dr. Grabow, so I've a bit of a soft spot for sweet (but not cloying) aros. My REAL discovery has been VA flakes. I'm completely enamoured of the preparation process. I've only tried University Flake and Dark Star, but I love them both. This weekend I'll probably get into my tin of McClelland 1776 Boston Flake.
That's enough for now. Thanks to you all for the smarts I've already gotten, looking forward to more!

Hi everyone!
New member / old smoker here ... just wanted to officially say "HELLO" and thanks for all the great info.
As the name implies, I'm a corn cob fanatic and enjoy many different types of tobacco.
Currently, most of my smoking is Va/Per's as these are newest to me. Love that peppery nose feel!
Up until recently though I had been pretty much a burley and occasional aro smoker.
Have a great day fellow pipers!
Darin

Hello gentlemen, or Ciao !

My name is Andrea and I'm writing from Italy. I've Been smoking pipe for about 10 years now (I'm 36) and wanted to join in in this nice community. I hope you will forgive my somehow poor english, I'll do my best not to make too many damages to the grammar :)
I actually have a collection of about 50 pipes, some of them "mistakes" of a beginner, many others pipes that I really love and some ready to be traded when I found something that make me go crazy....Living in Milano I have Al Pascià, Noli, Savinelli...all of them very, very near home, and Bollito from Torino not so far (2 hours by car)....so temptations aren't so far....
I'm really curious about pipemakers, their history, the way they work; I think that pipemakers are wonderful artisans, and hope their knowledge will never get lost in time.
My favorite pipes are , after a long time spent trying as many brands as I could , Castello, Peterson, Ser Jacopo, followed by Savinelli and Il Ceppo. I love classic shapes, but sometimes my heart is taken by a freehand design.... Sometimes I like Dunhill, but usually when I see a nice Dunhill I almost immediatly see a Castello, or an high grade Peterson that makes me change my mind...oh well :)
I mainly smoke natural tobaccos (Virginia Flakes basically) and some English mixtures. Rarely I smoke sweet tobaccos, even if, curiously, I began smoking with the sweet DaVinci tobacco...
Ciao a tutti

Andrea

Good Evening

My name is Andy, I've been a pipe smoker for 17 years, with the occasional cigar thrown in.
As far as pipes go, I love Charatan, Castello, Ser Jacopo, Ferndown and Ashton.
My tobacco choices run the gamut. I love Oriental/Virginia tobaccos like McClellands Grand Oriental and Va. No. 24 and similar, Scottish Mixtures (whatever we are defining them as now), Balkans and solid virginia flakes (no Lake District please).
Here's to lively discussions

Hello everyone from Upstate NY,
Just started up with the pipe a little over 2 weeks ago, although I dabbled with it back in the early 90's. I recently found out I like Latakia after working on a tin of Dunhill 965, also tried a Danish Mixture which was a nice smoke and a good change from the Latakia. A few minutes ago I popped open a new tin and just finished my first bowl of flake which was also my first Va/Per: Dunhill De Luxe Navy Rolls. So far I like them all except for the Lane Hazelnut blend I got as a free sample with my first Peterson pipe.
Looking forward to some future discussions here...

Hi everyone,
I'm a cigar smoker, and pipe convert, from the North Shore in Massachusetts, and just started smoking a pipe in August. I've been reading a lot of articles, FAQs and forum posts to educate myself so I can really enjoy and get the most out of the entire experience. This really seems like an amazing site and a great forum, really glad to be here!

Hello Friends,
My tobacco experience is nothing impressive. Messed around with cigarettes, doesn't do a lot for me. Neither do cigars. I have no idea why I picked up the pipe, but I absolutely love. It was an off and on thing for a while, but I feel like I can officially call myself a "pipe guy." It does wonders for my anxiety disorder issues, so much relaxation! I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject, but I'm looking forward to learning.
I'm a 21 year old Literature and Film student. Big fan of writing and music. Sometimes I drink too much, sometimes I don't. I'm not one of those hipster kids picking up the pipe for the look, I promise. Glad to be here.

What up guys,

I'm new to this forum but have been a member of a few other forums for 3 years or so. Looking forward to checking in, learning and adding to whatever is being discussed. Been smoking my pipes for 3 1/2 yrs. and enjoy them daily. I now have about 70 pipes in my collection with about 100lbs in the cellar.... Not enough. See ya around.
