Does anyone know what "breaking-in period" mean? And is there a "break-in" method we should use for new pipes? Thanks. River.

Greetings from Missouri.

As my username suggests, I prefer genueine Missouri Meerschaums. Heck, the company is only about 45 miles away from me.

I smoked my first pipe more than 40 years ago -- Cherry Blend in a Doc Grabow.

About 30 years ago, I really got into it, even had a couple of Savinellies and usually smoked Mac Baren's Golden Extra or Scottish Mixture.

Then I gradually drifted away from pipes in the late 80s and lost my pipes, pipe stand, humidor, pouch, etc. in a move.

Now I'm back.

A couple of months ago I bought two Mo. Meerschaums (would you believe I had never smoked them before?).

Man, I love these pipes.

I've been experimenting with various blends and OTC packages, and for now I have settled on Prince Albert and Carter Hall. Maybe I'm in an American classic phase.

As I write this I'm enoying some PA in a Country Gentleman and enjoying a cup of coffee. What a great combination.

Greetings to the Pipe People:
Just wanted to follow protocol and introduce myself. I have been a reader of the articles, etc. for a little while now, but wanted to join in order to participate in some discussions and ask a few questions here and there. I am 30 years old and smoked a pipe for roughly 8 years now. I look forward to gaining further insights, information, and anecdotes regarding pipe and tobacco.
The name refers to a poem of which the second part was composed by Ralph Erskine, a Scottish minister of the Gospel.
Kind regards to all!

Been 'lurking' for about a week now trying to catch up on some of the past posted info. Recently switched from cigs to pipe and I really hope my taste buds sart to come back soon.
Bhpdrew, whom I know from another forum, was cool enough to set me up with a couple pipes and a quite a bit of tobacco to start me out on. I'm really liking the 'Maple Street' as an 'on the way to work' smoke since it doesn't run my carpool partner outta the car, and I'm really looking forward to trying a few other samples until I find the 'one ring to rule them all'.

I sorta skipped the introduction and went straight into posting...oh well ;-)
Lets see...I reside in the Atlanta area, work in the local news business and I have been smoking a pipe for a couple years now, I have t2o Brigham pipes which are fantastic and a MacQueen pipe, which makes me feel like Gandolf minus the cool beard and hat. My wife doesn't like anything to do with my smoking so I stick to "Man Niche" in the garage where we have a tradition with my brother and best friend for "Mondays" which include grilling and smoking pipes...which if I ever miss I usually end up have a cruddy week. Thats about it...I look forward to learning much from everyone!
Carry on...

Hey everyone, I just joined the forums!
I just started smoking a pipe a few days ago actually. I've never smoked before, (I'm 24 years old) and bought a corn cob pipe to learn. I used to be 100% anti-tobacco. I mean I really couldnt stand it. I NEVER thought I would smoke tobacco. That was up until a couple weeks ago when I learned the TRUTH about tobacco, and how these anti-tobacco campaigns are lying! Its good to meet everybody!

Welcome co11apse, and one word of advice from a fellow newbie--take your time, 'cause there's no finish line. I've had my training wheels on for a couple decades now :)

Heyla all!
I'm a pretty new pipe smoker myself, after many issues from 2007-Mid November of 2010 with roommates and siblings 'mis-appropriating' my pipes I never had one for more than a few weeks before I had to toss it in the bin, but back in November I got myself 4 pipes (though only the two Petersons proved to be to my liking) and have been rather enjoying it since, including the occasional pipe borrowing with friends.
Of course it is time for my yearly 'entertainment' budget to be spent (get cooler toys when you do it that way heh heh) and I've got 2 rather nice (and 3 not-so-nice) pipes all picked out with my new music equipment. I am SO SO SO looking forward to my Peterson Ebony and Ivory set getting here! Ebony is a classic billiard straight and Ivory is a meerschaum bent billiard, which was the closest thing to my ideal meerschaum I could find.
I am most fond of Petersons, obviously.
Oh, and I am on a seemingly fruitless quest for the 'perfect' Peterson Green Spigot (ideally XL series)ever since I let that one slip through my fingers two years ago. Same goes for the perfect solid meerschaum 'calabash'-styled pipe (had one of them slip by as well heh heh).
I've pretty much given up on churchwardens, I've loved the ones I borrowed but all the ones that come in the shapes I am most fond of are a bit outside my price range, or use filters -- which I'm not fond of.
Bah, it's late, I'm tired, and thus talkative -- I'll shush now and dole out doses of me in smaller. . ermm. . . doses.

Hello everyone.
I'm a newbie here on the forums. I just joined today actually. I've been looking for a place to discuss and learn about pipes for some time but haven't really found a place until today. I'm not an experienced pipe smoker(been smoking for about a year) so I apologize in advance for any dumb questions. I'll try and keep those at a minimum. :)

Welcome mowens. The only dumb question is the unasked one. So ask away. We are more than happy to help you along the way. Also take a look at the left hand side bar for some articles that might help you out.
