Sounds like that's an M. Linkman, Co. pipe based on your description.

MCL in an oval stood for Mary C. Linkman who was the mother of the Linkman that started his company in the late 1890's in Chicago. Best to my knowledge any Linkman pipe had Linkman stamped on the stem.
