They're growing on me. Now I have 2. I guess I'm a Marxman fan now and I've not yet even smoked one. That is a nice pipe, that stem shape is interesting.
I’ve always liked the Captain. My guess is that it is a Post 54 pipe, but I am not absolutely sure about that.
My Marxman arrived today. Let's see how it smokes and I'll follow up. I wonder if this reddish color from smoking is what Briar Lee was talking about ? Also is the stinger removable ?
Briar Lee was not kidding this is a mean smoker but the Stinger has got to go somehow, it's a terrible stinger. But the pipe is very heavy duty and feels great in my hand.
Thank you. It's in great shape but I've got to clean and restore it. Chamber reamed back to Briar so easily. The cake does stick soft to the Algerian Bruyere, lol.I really like the looks of that pipe !
Do any of you guys know more about the Gold Crest line? Asking for someone on a fb group. I don't think I've seen these posted yet? Or did I miss it?

Gold Crown sorry. Idk if I can edit the post. Not my pipe, I just can't remember if Briar Lee had a few in all his Marxmans or not.

What does this tell us? It tells us that this is a Post 54 pipe sold or distributed by Mastercraft. All pre54 pipes came from the Big Apple. After 54, for the first year or so, Marxman BRANDED pipes were sold with the Marxman and the fish logo. From what I've seen, usually on the stem. After that, the words Marxman were all in Straight type with no logo.
In all cases, the pipes were made in either France or possibly Italy if I recall correctly. This pipe, is a Mastercraft knock off of the 400, but in no way is it a 400 or even close.
Is it a good smoking pipe? Maybe. My six panel Post 54 Marxman is an exceptional smoker. What is its value? To me, a collector, NOTHING. In my mind, it is NOT a Marxman.

As far as value and what it is to a collector...I spent $6 and took an couple of hours to bring it back to something respectable. Will likely stay on my rack until I get bored with it LOL.

I went to my two Marxman pipes and the Captain is marked with France. The billiard, however says Italy. So, I suppose both are Mastercraft and post '54 manufacture. But, both smoke wonderfully....... "C'est la vie"
This Marxman arrived today and sadly it has a crack the seller did not mention all the way through the bowl. Bummer
