Have always heard that Marxman pipes were ugly, but I really like them

I’ve always liked the Captain. My guess is that it is a Post 54 pipe, but I am not absolutely sure about that.Have always heard that Marxman pipes were ugly, but I really like them

Thanks, Scopes. That is the age range I have been thinking, too.I’ve always liked the Captain. My guess is that it is a Post 54 pipe, but I am not absolutely sure about that.
Thank you. It's in great shape but I've got to clean and restore it. Chamber reamed back to Briar so easily. The cake does stick soft to the Algerian Bruyere, lol.I really like the looks of that pipe !
very cool. I've not seen one of these, but I will bet you are correct on the reason for the line.
@towhee89 and @Choatecav The key to the Gold Crown Marxman is the following word... France.
What does this tell us? It tells us that this is a Post 54 pipe sold or distributed by Mastercraft. All pre54 pipes came from the Big Apple. After 54, for the first year or so, Marxman BRANDED pipes were sold with the Marxman and the fish logo. From what I've seen, usually on the stem. After that, the words Marxman were all in Straight type with no logo.
In all cases, the pipes were made in either France or possibly Italy if I recall correctly. This pipe, is a Mastercraft knock off of the 400, but in no way is it a 400 or even close.
Is it a good smoking pipe? Maybe. My six panel Post 54 Marxman is an exceptional smoker. What is its value? To me, a collector, NOTHING. In my mind, it is NOT a Marxman.

Great information. This is actually my pipe...found in a box at an antique store and have struggled finding any info. Knew it had to be a Mastercraft make due to "Made in France".@towhee89 and @Choatecav The key to the Gold Crown Marxman is the following word... France.
